    Kira - R.I.P.

My 4 yr old American Staffordshire Terrier died today.

She had plenty of water and full shade but the heat was too much. By the time I got home at 3pm she was already gone. Take extra care with your pets.

I love you and will always miss you Kira.

Leave your kids in the car, but man, take the pets inside - they're harder to replace.

this summer has been very very hot why did you leave your dog outside, with temps hitting over 100 it doesnt take long for it to die a terrible death.

A dog's body temperature is normally between 101°F and 102°F.
Dogs regulate their body temperature by panting, expelling heat out, causing an evaporatory reaction. If he can not expel the heat fast enough, his body temperature rises. A rise of 3 degrees to a temperature of 105°F is all it takes to send your dog into a dangerous situation. At this temperature, the dog can no longer cope with reducing his body heat and the oxygen demand goes up to where the dog can not keep up, and his temperature continues to rise.

When the temperature hits 108°F, the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and intestinal tracts start to begin breaking down at a cellular level, and the damage can progress at an alarming rate. Even immediate treatment and effective cooling to bring his temperature down can leave the dog with internal damage that may affect his health in long term ways.

Leaving your dog cooped in a hot car is a sure way to bring on heat stroke. A hot car is like an oven, with temperatures that can rise an astounding 34°F per minute! People have been known to break windows to retrieve dogs in danger from hot cars, if they don't do it themselves, the Humane Society most assuredly will.

                          Early Signs of Heat Stroke
Rapid breathing, dry mouth and nose, rapid heart rate, and gums that leave their healthy colour for dull, greyish-pink, or red, are all early stages of heat stroke. This IS an EMERGENCY! Even at the earliest stage of heat stroke, you may be fighting for your dog's life. You must get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
These symptoms can be followed in minutes by collapse, seizures, coma and death.

Very sorry to hear that. It has been so hot here and my pug isn't great with the heat. I have been dipping her in the sink every few hours and giving her ice cubes to play with. I worry about the same sort of thing.

Very sad. Dont you think that it would have been well worth the cost of a kennel for the house, and then leave the ac set at 85?

That's so sad... it breaks my heart to hear stories like that.
Our air conditioning bill is through the roof during the summer months because I insist on leaving it running all day for my animals. But even if it hits 85 degrees inside my cats are miserable, and cats seem to do better in heat even than dogs do. The extreme heat we get in the Sacramento area is one thing that has kept me from getting a dog.

P.S. to sarah_webinc: Please don't take this the wrong way... I just noticed your post and thought I might give you a heads up. You may want to do some research on this because it's something I've only heard a couple of times but have never bothered to verify it. I've heard that giving a dog ice cubes and/or ice water in hot weather can be lethal to the dog, putting it's system into shock because their bodies are not capable of regulating quickly enough. Like I said, I could be wrong, but it might be worth doing some research about to avoid a possibility of a very sad loss. When it comes to our beloved little pets, always better to be safe than sorry.
