Digital Still Camera Suggestions

We're in the market for a decent digital still camera. One that will do a good job and not set us back too far financially. I'm sure at least one or two of you out there have one, so what are your suggestions?

try a sony mavica or olympus...
anything over 3 megapixel and a good lighting kit should do you well...

The sony S85 or something like that is suppose to be the best for the money. Or if you want portability and almost the same quality go for one of the new Canon's

I use Olympus cameras (currently, the C-4040-Z) with the FL-40 flash unit and the extension bar. People ask me what kind of lighting I use, assuming I use expensive studio lighting, but all I use is fill and bounce, which means I can take my camera and lighting into a hotel in a relatively small camera bag! Don't think for a minute you need $3000 worth of lighting to do more than acceptable photography.

I particularly like the sony cyber-shot series in the consumer/prosumer level.. I have found it to be better than similarily priced nikons.. (But we're not talking top of the range here - i didn't like the 990 series much compared to the DSC-s75 - but thats just me.. other more experienced people may tell you otherwise) If you get a Mavica make it a CDRW one - damn those memory sticks are expensive! then again so are CDRW Mavicas i guess - also having a laptop handy at digital shoots is great if you don't have a large storage solution so you can upload whenever your cards get near saturation point...
Cameras with microdrives such as the Canon range are a great solution if you can't afford a half gig card or don't have a laptop handy...
do you mind buying second hand?

as rollin said just make sure it's over 3 megapixels and your lighting is good.. (this is particularly inportant with mid-range digital cameras)
be aware that a typical lighting rig of a couple of lights and associated paraphenalia will cost around the same as your camera - if not a fair amount more once you include tripods and heads.... lightmeters...
i would suggest pricing light hire as well.. when starting out it's sometimes easier to include a hire component in your budget than go too far in the red by buying all the equipment..

I've got an Olympus 2040Z, good midlevel camera around $400+ range, but quality is excellent and it even does a little video.

I use an olympus C-3000 zoom for my work on dormangels... it took a little while to figure out, but the latest pics on there are much better in terms of lighting, focus, etc.
We've never used auxilary lighting, although it works with it ... so I don't know how good it is with that stuff.

It has a whole shitload of functions, and will rival midline to better film stills in the functionality, adjustability, and customizability.

It's a 3 megapixel cam and runs nowadays for maybe $500 ... it's a pretty damn good camera if you want amateur content. I wouldn't recommend it for professional quality stuff.

Another thing .. I don't know a fucking thing about photography and it's easy enough to use that I can still make an amateur site with it ;-)

heheh i had a minolta dimage V about 4 years ago when the highest res was 640x480 that had a removable swivel lens.. it was sweet! you had a 3 foot cord you put it on that attached it to the main body..

ok ok.. so im a sony slut .. i guess i'm somewhat biased.. i just think they do great digital stuff.. i've also got a DCRVX-2000 that rocks nads pretty damn hard. I've always found them very good with their UI's too...

i haven't actually read up on the s85 before today (i've got the s70) but heres an excerpt from steve's digicams (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/s85_pg1.html)
thats pertinent to your situtation.

I've got a canon D30 and the sony DCRVX-1000 which I like more then then 2000 but they don;t make the 1000 any more

Go to cnet.com and look at all the reviews..It will show you what the winner is for price..Thats what i did and nikon was the champ at that time..As far as now i dont know,but there are so many to choose from..

You can shoot the model from the ground up and they come out awesome..

I have an Olympus E-10 and love it.

An important factor is MEMORY... get a cam that is flexible. Compact Flash memory is the cheapest. Sony is the most expensive and it's also proprietary.

They also have cam forums. Do your homework before purchasing and you will be rewarded with a great cam.

AWC is right about one thing, http://www.dpreview.com/ is the BIBLE of digital cameras.

What you should use is dependant on what you're using it for (naturally). Are you using it for content or just personal use?

yes it's a nice pic
i wasn't disputing fill and bounce - but multiple fixed lights tend to give more control over shadows and depth.. - ok ok.. of course you don't NEED $1500 but it would help.. of course it would... a million dollars to set up a studio would help too, it wasn't a mandate, it was a silly comment in the way i'd say a ferrari wouldn't hurt..
