    Big TGP's have quit growing?

Looks like they are all flat lining? Maybe the big guys have just gotten complacent or is that model matured?

Yep, the links work. I have kept an eye on this trend for a while and its a downward trend that seems to have been going on for a while.

            The real question is: why?

My theory is that the major TGP's are losing traffic to niche TGP's and the market space is continuing to grow with new TGP's every day that is doing a better job developing SE traffic.

            Other thoughts or ideas?

Some of the big tgp's do great on the SE's. I think it has more to do with message boards that share stuff. You can get whole members areas.

Using Alexa to judge your traffic is like using the weather to judge the flavor of your coffee. There is very little relation.

You can check out Matt Cutt's blog for more info on sampling problems.

Short version is this: In order for Alexa to count traffic, the use has to have the Alexa toolbar installed. Most spyware and anti-virus programs detect that toolbar as a virus, so the active install rate isn't all that high. Basically, you are sampling more people who don't have a clue, don't run anit-virus, and don't care what is going on with their computers.

Most porn surfers have been so abused by scamware, viruses, and other shit that less than honest people in our business try to jam at them that experienced surfers will have all the tools to check thier shit out. So what you get is less apparent traffic counted as per Alexa.

The hottest site is MySpace. Why? It is popular, that is for sure, but it is popular with less technical people and less experience web people, and they are more likely to NOT check for viruses and spyware. So Alexa gets and keeps more installs in that sort of a group.

Quite simply, Alexa doesn't report what the hardcore porn surfer does, because they aren't registering anymore, and they aren't using the Alexa toolbar.

Want to see how bad it is? Find a site you own that is in the range of about 100,000 ranking on Alexa. install their toolbar onto your PC (and maybe your laptop) and surf around your own site very day for a couple of weeks with the toolbar on. You will see a huge jump in your numbers, because the same rate is so freaking small, that you (and your laptop) are enough to sway the numbers.

                  Good luck!

I am not sure their toolbar was ever big. I use alexa all the time for comparison and usually it is pretty good.

slapass, I know from looking at some of my own sites that sites with similar traffic will often show vastly different alexa results. 2 extra Alexa surfers can move you from 200,000 ranking to 100,000 ranking pretty quickly.

Such a small sampling make their error rate (especially outside of the top 10,000 or so websites) almost mind numbingly large, probably close to 50% error rate.

I think what Alex is saying rings true, also. I would say, though, that a new trend that will continue to take away traffic is the file sharing networks, etc where users are discovering fuller video clips for free.

exactly, why should i go to watch some sample pics or movies to some tgps, if i can get whole member areas on message boards?
there are better ways to get free porn then to visit some tgp/mgp for nowadays surfers.

Whatever message boards or TGP/MPG, Alexa does not do an accurate job of reporting actual traffic. All have to do is look at my own sites.

Still I suspect there is fall off on the old school TGPs. Even with the fall off a bit in traffic, they are still reeling in the surfers. I don't think you could call them down and out. I wouldn't give up on the text model either.

Although there are still plenty of TGPs which are growing and thriving, in general, I have noticed TGPs taking a downward spiral. There are some big TGPs pulling in far less traffic than they used too. This downward spiral is due to many factors, all of which I will not explain here. One factor though, is excessive use of free hosted galleries and TGPs only accepting paid partner submits. Webmasters who submit galleries know the huge impact that paid partner accounts had on the TGP industry. Paid partner accounts changed the entire infrastructure and relationship between TGP and submitter. It makes sense to conclude there would also be some kind of impact/effect on the actual TGPs and surfers.

I think you are right in that the quality of posts on the TGP's has declined because partner accounts.

Likewise, I am sure that surfers get pretty tired of seeing the same FHG's all over the place.

While Alexa may not be accurate because of sampling problems, which are well known, I think it is a good tool to show general trends as long as you consider the limitations of the data creating those trends. IMHO anway, of course I could be wrong, but we'll likely never know.

I think you hit the nail on the head... message boards are getting bigger now that surfers can upload to image revenue and rapidshare etc

Why go to a tgp and browse through galleries with a bunch of ads when you can see it all without blind links and be interactive with other people on message boards

i agree on the alexa deal, i got Search Status installed as an extension on my firefox, and it reports back to alexa, just like the toolbar does... and just me browsing my site while working on it, has given it a decent rank for only 1 visitor a day, lol

                                                            The real question is: why?

My theory is that the major TGP's are losing traffic to niche TGP's and the market space is continuing to grow with new TGP's every day that is doing a better job developing SE traffic.

                                                            Other thoughts or ideas?

As for the question about the issues that faced TGP, there's a shitload of them, got any particular ones in mind?

There are several types of adult blogs. Some of them are mainly a different layout of a TGP, focusing primarily on image content and linking out to various galleries. Some focus more on written content and kick in a few image/vid samples. And, of course, there are those inbetween.

Low conversions? Can't say this would be a blog thing, if it's an issue, but rather lacks of salesmanship skills with the webmaster. There surely is a saturation momentum, especially with babelogs, in terms of babes/glamour/softcore sponsors. I expect this to change and more and more "babelogs" catering to other niches to spring up.

However, as I can see, most abovementioned models, be they babelogs or full-text blogs, are being treated kindly by search engines, at least sporadically. I suppose the daily influx of fresh content, not only in terms of links out to other sites/galleries, but also in terms of new pages added to the site itself (posts) does add to the pile of spider food.
