what do you do when someone steals a check?

i was missing a check from a sponsor and when i contacted them they said the check had already been cashed.. i knew for a fact that i didnt recieve/cash in that check but went to my bank to make sure, and i was right, there was no check deposited for that amount... so has anybody ever been in this position before? what steps should i take (if any)?

Well when things like that happens, I always
firt suspect the sponsor, before you think
    the mailman stole it..

If I were you i'd first do some research
about the sponsor. Post some messages on
    message forums..

      ace0r,

If you're talking about Join4free, then I would e-mail them and get it sorted out. Join4free would not rip you off.

Well, I cannot understand how can somebody cash the check issued to somebody elses name. It would be impossible here. I have to prove my identity in bank each time I go there...

Well if you live in a un-secure area, i would get a P.O BOX address.. that way you are covered 99% unless the mail man really did steal it..

If the sponsor said the check was cashed then this is easy. have the sponsor get their bank to make a copy of the check. If it was really a check it will have all the info of who, when and where it was cashed...
then you can take the appropriate steps from there.

One sponsor sent me a check for somone else in the envelope with my check. So even if it wasn't stolen out of your mailbox it is possible that someone else got it.

BTW - I destroyed the check as per the sponsor's suggestion, so it wasn't me

It's easy to cash a check in someone elses name. It's not difficult to find a "shady" check cashing place. Around half of the places around here that stricly cash checks will do so WITH a form of ID, but it doesn't have to be a VALID form of ID. These money hungry joints usually take a percentage of the check for themselves.

I've been thinking about what I would do if I found out a check of mine had been cashed at one of these sorry joints. Prolly get on the phone to my lawyer and sue their asses.

Ace0r Our accountant looked it up, called the bank, and the amount that we discussed by email this morning was cashed on Jan 25th...by you..... The following check was mailed out on Feb 1st so you should be getting it any minute. I will have Jeff check on this one in the morning when he's at the office and see if there is some sort of problem. But I see this happen all the time and I would hold back from putting a stop payment on it because you will likely get it the day after you do this and it will cost you 30 bucks. You'll find the post date on the envelope correct as well Talk to you in the morning.

Ace0r, you ARE retarded but I won't tell anyone hehehe.... no seriously if a check takes more than 10 days int he US or over 20 days out of the country, don't hesitate to let us know. Ususally when webmasters bring it to our attention it's 3 days after the check has been issued or whatever or the check hasn't hit the minimum amount or something like that.

But in this case, I'm glad you brought it to my attention because after all, we have one guy that does thousands of checks every two weeks and sooner or later, as much of a perfectionist as he is, there's bound to be a mistake. Thanks Ace0r, for being mature about it and handling it like a grown man. Makes my job much nicer ) Have a good one.

People don't go to those extents to cash cheques not in their names - and if they did they would have to know your schedule - if your really worried and its worth it request a wire transfer or paypal.
