btw, you don't need to take gfy down to build your index.
Just build the index on a slave and mod the search function to use that server.

I used to LOVE the search option. Maybe fixing it will cut down on all the double triple posting we see now. I say go for it. I use to use GFY to research problems, but that became worthless a long time ago. Bring back a good search.

My background is in Database Architecture, and I just don't see how GFY could take 36 hours to re-index. ItIt can't be that large of a database, really.

Some of the databases I've designed and worked on handle more transactions per day than GFY has posts overall with very complicated indexes and can be completely reindexed in far less than 36 hours.

Just out of curiousity, what am I missing here?

Do what ya gotta. If it were me, I think I'd go for the improvements. What would be the down side? The other adult boards might get a shot in the arm. For sure their activity would be up during the down time. You'd have the "Make Good" hassel with your advertisers. Don't know how your contracts read, but suspect the advertisers will want something.

Other downsides might be? Headaches of tech staff if something goes burp along the way.

Upsides would be less bitching about the search feature. Suspect you have a list of things to fix. The down time would give you the opportunity to go down your list...

Call it 48 hours so when you do it in 36, you look good. You know users will still find something to bitch about.
