    Seriously though, trying to put borders around words (who can and can't use them) is futile. For that very reason, people will use them. Maybe a better solution would be to use them in a way that eventually changes their original meaning.

        I grew up my first thirteen years in Louisiana, followed by a stint in a small town in Oklahoma. My grandparents, cousins, (pretty much all relatives) were, by modern, urban standards, racist and intolerant.

        Of course, definitions vary based on culture.

        I was never like that, in fact, I was quite the opposite. When I moved to Kansas, I attended KU, which is often compared to Berkley. The contrast from the deep south to KU pretty much shaped who I am today. KU was liberal and extremely Politically Correct. I once made the front of The Daily Kansan for "assaulting" Fred Phelps, the courier of hate against Jews, blacks, you name it.

        My opinion after living with both sides?

        It depends on the intent of the use. Occasionally, someone reads my blog and sends me a message telling me that I am "insensitive to other cultures." The plight of the PC is, in some cases, just as dangerous as the plight of those that hate.

        I have probably seen more places in the world than most Americans ever will even know exist on a map. The blog is about political humor, sometimes you need to read the context to get it (for the record, most do). But being PC has trained people to look at the painting on the wall, rather than the people in the house.

        I have always had plenty of gay friends. Usually, they call me a "fag." And I find it funny. I spent a lot of my college years in performing arts, it doesn't get more liberal than that.

        Chandie, I think you are right, but I think you are referring more to people who use the terms with malicious intentions, and or ignorance.

        Actions will always speak louder than words. Our sensitivity sometimes gets in the way of the reality of the world.

        On an interesting note, many people think I am gay. No secret. But if you ever notice, I rarely "deny" it. Why? Because sometimes denying it paints it with a shameful brush, depending on the source. Of course, someone vigorously denying they are a "fag" is often looked past because someone said "fag." The levels are often deeper than we understand or care to pay attention to.

        Hate isn't words, it is intentions. Just because someone is PC, it doesn't mean they are truly tolerant. PC has tought many that by not using words, they are somehow helping the world.

        Anyways, that is my thoughts on it all. Hopefully it doesn't come off as insulting, I enjoy these subjects and believe the debate is healthy

                Although you would never know it here; we are all much more alike then we are different: straight, gay, black, white , Asian; the differences between who we love or what we look like seem to carry great relevance here and that is more then just unfortunate when, given our professional, a frightening number of increasingly powerful people, groups, organizations and lobby's would paint us all with a single brush: we are smut peddling sinners. While there are some who will wear the moniker proudly and show up at the next webmaster function with it on a t-shirt, when it comes to hearing on .xxx, 2257, site labeling laws...would we all be so different then and unable to come together to mount a cohesive defense to protect our livelihoods and the rights to free speech? Would hate and bigotry win out even then as we would be just as fractured? Perhaps we would. That is a pretty sad state for the state of affairs to be in.

                We will all get along? Of course not. That is not how the world operates and arguably, that may not be in keeping with human nature; life is not one big unconditional love in but I question what is really behind the motivation to go out of one's way to be hateful. Intolerance is simply ignorance with specifications attached.

                                Amen. I know plenty of people that are politically correct to a fault but privately they're the worst bigots on the planet. Then I have friends that will just say stupid things like ghey, faggot, etc but be completely tolerant of others. Intent is what really matters.

                                            The people I am referring to DO use it on a daily basis...and they aren't gay, aren't black, etc. I am none of the above, but appreciate the diversity of my friendships EVERY day of my life and will never tolerate someone calling them a term that is less than complimentary.

I am referring to the people who feel they have a right to post threads about "hating faggots more than hahahahahahas" etc. I am STUNNED when I read something so archaic and so elementary. Do these people NOT live in the United States? Do these people NOT do business with a mixed bag of AMAZINGLY diverse international clients?                                                             I could go on and on as to how those words really disturb me. I've been called the N word numerous times growing up (even at a nursing home by a resident when I was visiting my friend Lindsay who worked there), a spic, wetback, burned taco.. you name it. I can laugh at the Burn Taco comment now because it's so fucking stupid but I didn't think so than. It hurt my feelings.

                                                            I don't believe that there is an good intent when someone says those words. Joking or not Joking.

                                                            Maybe because I was a victim of racism/prejudice (call it what you will) I will NEVER tolerate it. It stays with you forever.

                                                            I had to even put my lil nephew in place when I heard he was making fun of a gay kid at school because everyone was doing it. What a disgrace. I was mortified but more than anything embarassed.

                                                            No! blood of mine will every be raised to say such hurtful things.
                                                            I told him my personal stories and put him in that lil boy's place. It wouldn't feel good to be there, and explained what being gay meant and that there is absolutely nothing with it.

I love what you said about denying being gay. For many of us gays we have spent years denying it because of the hurtful things people have said about gays, faggots, dykes. Myself included, it is only recently that I have come to terms with who I am and realized that my sexuality is only a small part of who I am, it is really nice to see someone who is not only so open but gets it!
