I am going to learn php/mysql, is this a good book?

I never use the books I have because so much is available online.

the books by wrox are the best

if you dont know shit, spend a week going through about the first 5 chapters and test excersizes

then start your own little project and use the rest of the book / innanet as a reference

isn't asp windows based? considering I have all freebsd servers i don't think that would work out too well

I run windows boxes and still run mysql php lol

I would rather have the book because highlighting and turning pages on my monitor would be expensive. I like having the physical book in front of me

You should definately bookmark the sites mikeyddddd posted. You'll be visiting php.net a lot. Just add a function name to the URL for a link right to the page... www.php.net/mysql_query

I haven't used that book, but I started with an O'Reilly book which was only ok.

Im not a linux guys so that I cant answer, but I do believe .asp is a windows thing.

Learning programming from books sucks imo. I learned just searching tutorials online. Do a few beginner tutorials, use php.net to reference different functions and go to work.

I made the mistake of buying 2 separate books, one for mysql and one for php. This is definitely a waste and I ended up getting the O'reily Mysql+Php book. Anything with Mysql+Php in the title is a good idea.

there is one about to come out that has apache+php+mysql in the title, it looked interesting

Having a combined book at first is good, but once you need to get into the details of each technology, focused books are good.

Think of a project you want to do. Then do it. Along the way you'll hit roadblocks. When you do, google it and you'll find the answer. One of the best boards for php is www.phpbuilder.net.

I bought "PHP 5 The Fast & Easy Web Development" writen by Juloe Meloni.. It's not to bad but I could never stay focused enough to learn it..

I'd suggest checking out www.3dbuzz.com as he has a few PHP training videos that you can D/L for free.

I don't know anything about the book you posted about, but at the very least it seems up to date (both php5 and mysql 5) so you will be getting current info. If you know nothing about programming a book is a good way to go verse learning online. Online docs will confuse and frustrate a newbie very quickly -- but if you have experience programming the opposite will happen the book will just slow you down.

As for the ASP debate, I think there are modules (older) that will let you run ASP/.NET on a linux machine... but why would you want to do that? Stick with PHP, RubyOnRails, or Django.
