The way I understand it is that he his relationship with this guy is pretty minimal. They served on a board together and had some other crossings because they are/were both politically active in Chicago.

Factcheck seems to say that McCain and Palin's attacks are pretty much baseless. Did he know this guy? Sure. Did they "pal around" or were they "friends" no. Does he support this guy? No. So in short I would say I am much less worried about his "relationship" with this guy that I am with say Bush's family relationships with the leaders of Saudi Arabia.
