does your city endorse renewable energy?

    solar or wind?

do you notice more and more people using solar? the city using solar on city lights etc?

Traverse City in Michigan has a wind farm, but I haven't seen any increase in wind
or solar power generation being done by homeowners or local/city governments besides that one.

The focus on renewable energy for the Detroit car makers has shifted from developing hybrids/fuel cell technology to producing more flex fuel vehicles such as the ones the utilize methanol and biodeisel fuels. Ford announced something along those lines last week. There has also been talks of grants for farmers willing to produce more "Energy crops" such as corn etc.. I would think that the smart place to invest would be in methanol related industries.

dont think 1 cell on top of those would produce enuff power to power the light poles.. let alone the city.

ive got solar lights in my drive way.. seen those? stupid little lamps that turn on at night?

those fucking things sit there all day and only use the power they stored at night. they dont make it through the night, and are so dim that you can barely see em.

this has nothing todo with sustaining power via solar or wind.. it has todo with reducing your electric bill for your home and your business. we are not there yet making solar products strong enough to power things that is cost effective, but we are the point where you can offset your utility bills by half at an affordable cost

you can use solar to power emergeny phones, stop lights, cross walk lights etc etc

i dont think you are thinking of all the things you see and use day to day that can take advantage of this.

solar hot water heating?( hot water heating takes up 20% of your ultility bill )

a/c units? 60% of your electric bill.

isolate your appliances that use the most and power them with solar and wind and you can see the savings with simple math.

That would be a huge waste of money. The panels simply wouldn't be large enough to do anything worthwhile with. About the only thing you could do would be to build up enough charge during the day to power up the light for the following night, but to do that you'd need to use batteries, and that's just a whole other environmental fuckup that people always seem to overlook. In the future when they've got stable hyrdogen fuel cells (with hyrdogen being produced using renewable energy), then it'd interesting. But it'll be one hell of a long time before it's cost effective (ie. a hell of a long time before you can make any money out of it).

Then again, you could always sell the shit to local councils. They're not always concerned about whether or not it will make money. Just trying to buy that naive green vote for the next election.

Windpower is the real future of renewable energy.

You can actually power your entire house using solar power with mains power still connected as a simple backup. There are people who generate enough power with solar panels that they're able to sell excess energy back to the power companies. It's just 'cuase there's such a large surface area over somene's home's roof that it does become more cost effective to do.

It's still not at the point where it's going to save anyone money, but it's reached the point where a wealthy environmentally conscious person is becoming more likely to take the hit to his wallet to be green power friendly.

Certainly money to be made selling to that market.
