If anything, it's the other way around. US people are so self-centered because the US has been a powerhouse in the international community for so long that they aren't exposed to international news, politics, and business because we aren't effected by it as much.
The fact that what happens in the US effects almost every international community makes international countries more aware of what is going on with the US.

I will agree that here in the US unless you watch CNN 20 hours a day the international news is pretty much limited to just stuff that involves or directly effects us. However, the few times that I have been to other countries outside the US there is not a ton of news about the details of the American political system. Then again, I will admit when I have been outside the country I haven't spent a ton of time checking into the news and reading every paper.
