New Firefox Add-On Detects A Computer's Location
Mountain View, CA (AHN) - Mozilla has introduced an add-on software to its Firefox web browser that tells the location of a computer.
The Geode, which will be made available in Firefox version 3.1, will help mobile web users know their current location and link them to things like the nearest restaurant, for example. It works by mapping Wi-Fi signals in an area to establish the location.
The geolocation technology Loki of Skyhook Wireless is used in Geode. It is faster than GPS-based methods, which takes 45 seconds to detect a location.
Websites with Geode ask for information about the location of a user in a neighborhood or community to pinpoint the location. The user determines how much information to share to protect his or her privacy.
Firefox users can download Geode to test the add-on using the demo website Food Finder.
