I am not a fan of mandatory laws, due to the language of the proposed bills and the rhetoric supporting it is basiclly "anti-porn", rather than really looking at it as protecting children.. but also, allowing adults to find adult content.
its pretty simple.. label on your own terms and for the right reasons, or have the government do it for their reasons.

Someone was born or agreed to be a US citizen has have to carry that baggage to the grave (or relinquish citizenship), - it's just absurd

Not only is there less fuss - almost on a weekly basis as regards US adult websites, - but there are no plans to have labelling in the vast majority (if any) of other countries.Originally posted by FightThisPatentand whose to say that Canada, EU, etc might not adopt similar ideas of labeling? You only have too look at Germany at what the porn industry went through to see that EU is not the magic safe land. Mobile industry in EU has guidelines for rating of content on mobile phones.
Basically - it's just not an issue. There are already laws applying to, not just the net, but generally as regards "adult content".
Sure, Germany has, let's say, "different laws", but overall the EU is far less problematic than operating in the US. In fact, the US is prob the worst place out of all western countries to be operating an adult biz. It used to be dramatically different, but things have changed a lot over time - hell, as you know Brandon.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

There are only four countries on the planet who have "non resident" taxation in place for their citizens. The only western country is the US, followed by Lybia, Saudi and some other "stan" country.Originally posted by will76talk about absurd, how much does Yoa Ming make that he has to send back to China. All other nations do not tax their non-resident citizens on earnings while they remain non-resident.
Correct Will - moving and relinquishing citizenship is the final "cutoff" option, but understand they actually charge for this "privilege"??Last edited by Webby; 06-29-2006, 06:12 PM.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

I agree that some amount of the taxbase could be reduced if webmasters are going overseas, but the amount of tax money lost wouldn't be missed.Originally posted by MichaeliousThe thing is the amount of tax dollars that the USA will lose if goes through is crazy.
This "economic harm" point unfortunately won't hold up as a defense for not approving the labeling bill.

You are at least the 1000th person to make that misguided statement here.Originally posted by mattzmore than likely just another scare this going to blow over just like the other 60 of them...but ill keep my eyes open and im ready to move my shit over seas which should take care of the problem
"Moving your shit overseas" is not going to protect you one single bit unless you also move overseas, relinquish your US citizenship and become a citizen of a country that doesn't have recipical cooperation with the US on the law(s) you are trying to avoid
Changing citizenship isn't just a matter of filling out paperwork and can take years..Comment

Sure would have been nice if we had sent someone that actually knew the industry - watching his answers to congressmen on the panel made me sick - if thats our representation, we dont have a chanceOriginally posted by FightThisPatentIn the house energy and commerce committee where Paul Cambria was on the panel, the committee told Cambria to take back a message to the industry... self-label or congress will do it.Comment

Yes, Republicans have made and are making strides to curb the proliferation of porn on the internet, but so have the Dems. I can actually respect the Republicans motivations for their anti-porn crusade more than I can the Dems; Republicans cling to their values (and, unfortunately, try to stick them on everyone else), but the Dems just want to tax the shit out of us to fund more of their bloated gov't programs (a la .xxx and the 25% tax). What other industry besides cigarettes would they ever try to kill with taxes? And we're not even killing people, only helping them to jerk off!

i would think its a very republican idea, to allow private sector and states handle these issues..... rather than have big government regulate (more of a dem issue). Politically speaking, republicans are taking moral agenda in using big government.. thus blurring philosopical lines.
filtering companies do their thing, search engines do their thing, ISP do their thing... private sector isn't concerned with eliminating porn, its concerned with restricting kids from seeing porn or seeing porn at work, schools, and libraries.
i know that many paysites have members from the workplace, but those employees really shouldn't be looking at porn at work.. it wastes time, productivity, and resources.... so filtering would block that access (in many places, already in place, so labeling doesn't change much).
i believe adults should be able to find adult content and children should be able to stay away from such content.. i don't agree with the prosecutions of adult content.. ....people want porn as a consumer choice, just like it is the choice of an adult who doesn't want to see porn in their surfing, that they can filter it out.
Some believe we see these things in cycles, and it wil go away.. but look at the trending in the last 4-5 years.. it is picking up.. and to Dave's point, this is a major issue.. but i don't think it is the end of the biz, nor the exodus to offshore.
Labeling is simple and easy... could there be rammifications that the government secretly makes ISP shutdown porn, sure.. but that is a far stretch...and if it did happen, much like Australia passing a law recently that porn can't be hosted in their country... then businesses will adapt and evolve.
But until that doomsday happens, it would seem that businesses would do what the law says, like 2257, and while labeling is not a law (yet), labeling now, is for the right reasons.. to give parents and adults the choice of what not to see for themselves, or for their children.
The same right you have to distribute porn content is the same right someone has not to see it.. and if labeling is a compromise, to be the equivalent of turning the channel if you don't like what you are watching, then that's where i see it.
Fight the label this!

i completely understand your points... but what they are saying is that porn leads to porn addiction, to domestic violence, to sexually related crimes, and to the most incorrect and absurd comment to child porn.Originally posted by JerseyPumaWhat other industry besides cigarettes would they ever try to kill with taxes? And we're not even killing people, only helping them to jerk off!
There are studies that support that notion and studies to refute.. but its what the finger pointers know.. that the access to porn online is some threat to themselves and to their children.
The hypocrasy of those that go to strip clubs on saturday night and church on sunday morning astounds me when those righteous fingers point outwards, that if they looked inwards, to see their own sexually closeted lives should be lead by their own examples.
This is a public perception issue... doesnt matter if you and I agree that filtering is not 100% and that some child could get exposed..... but, if enough people are part of the solution, then its easier to identify the real problems.. the specific websites that arent engaged in this labeling effort.
The public sentiment is too great on this particular topic, and I believe that most adult webmaster parents (and even those that don't have children) would agree with this labeling effort.
So are the affiliate webmasters and paysites going to label?
