Where Should I Move In Europe?

I'd live in northern Italy, near lake Garda or Como. One of the most beautiful places in the world for me. A lot of smaller cities to choose there. You'd have all the facilities of the modern civilisation together with a unique combination of rural and history. Great weather, too.

Was near there only for a short time, but loved every minute - food is excellent and great weather!

I moved from the UK to Spain 8 years ago, so much nicer working in the sun.

I used to live in Barcelona but the language pisses me off, so I moved down the coast, If you're going to put your kids into english schools it should be o.k, I didn't want my kid taught in Catalan.

It is a great city, not as cheap as it used to be but still cheaper than the U.K.
Valencia is a great city aswell, always gets overlooked.

We're in Budapest for the past 7 years.
PLUS:
Pretty cheap, ie 100m2 flat in the center, rental around $500p/m. To buy would be around $150,000 (and you can get a UK morgage!).
Bills for the above around $130p/m.
Lots of stuff happening in the Summer.
Location wise very Euro-centric, with cheap flights to any European city via Easyjet et al.
No possibility of joining the Euro for eons, and with a falling local currancy, if you're paid $ or GBP, you just get progressively better off.

MINUS:
Winter stinks...grey weather, grey peeps and grey attitude ( and ex-Socialist grey to boot!).
Pain in the ass to do anything through the 'legal' channels'. Best to be like us, offshore.
Language is a real toughy, Hungaian is one of the worlds unique minority languages.
'Get rich quick' culture means it hard to find trustworthy or even hard working peeps. We shoot our own content and the number of agents who swear blind that this or that girl has never worked before...only for us to see her all over the web...the same day!
Schooling your 2 children will be around $1600 p/m, as there are only private English schools.
I like to judge a culture by how they behave when drunk. Having lived for more than 10 years in Barcelona, when they drink, they sing, cry or sleep. Together. Here in Budapest, when drunk they try to commit suicide (one of the highest rates in the world) or just sit at home. Alone. Take your pick.

Hi, I am an Aussie living in the Czech Republic for 13 years now and I am working in the adult industry with no problems.

I don't know why people are saying the language is a barrier when in fact my Czech is shit. Believe me when I say a very large part of the community speak English even more so in Prague. The only language problems you may have is with officials.

You don't have to worry about anything as you are a British citizen (pom) and you have EU rights here

I agree with most of the things you said, but the drunk part...you were wrong
Things changed. Now if you go out you can see drunk people all around town. I know it because usually I'm one of them
so the night life is really great here especially in summer...lots of open air places!
The other thing is: you said it's hard to find trustworthy or even hard working peeps. That is absoltely not true,maybe you're just met the wrong peeps...most of hungarian peeps are really hard working. They learned it for 40 years in the socialist era...
So imo you should try Budapest Kristian! It's really a good place to live. But if you don't want to live here my other choice would be Vienna.

Preference for me would be Amsterdam or Barcelona. Monaco is nice too Mate of mine just bought a 7 bedroom villa in the South of Spain for 260K quid - absolutely stunning and great location. Money goes further in Spain than most European countries.

Prague gets my vote.

I think Valencia is a nice place to live.

Holy Cow --- I've had some great replies while I was sleeping! I'm going to say a big thank you and get down to re-reading, absorbing, and doing a bit of googling. Prague, Budapest and, I have to say, Malta are the top choices for me right now. I will post more in a bit. Cheers.

No country in Europe beats Holland regarding freedom. Cost of living and weather, there are better places

Everything is closed on Sunday in Austria, most things on Saturday and after 17:00 PM during the week. I'm sure young people need the opposite.

Freedom is the same in most Europe countries. Except smoking weed, what other freedoms do you mean?

I lived two years on the french riviera and loved it! Stay away from Cannes center, but find a house near Mougins or Valbonne...about 7 to 15 km from Cannes in the mountains. A lot of englishmen live here, you will have the Mougins international school, english doctors etc..etc..

There is nowhere else in Europe you will find areas like the riviera. You have the cities of Cannes, Nice and Monaco, with the film festival, the grand pris, boat shows, music awards, shopping etc..etc... 80km to st. Tropez for the summer, 1 hour to skiing in the mountains at Isola2000. 3 hours to Milano and Turin, 4 to Firenze. 2 hours flight back to UK with multiple airlines from Nice.

My 2nd choice would be Geneva or Lausanne or even one of the smaller cities like Montreaux around the Geneva Lake.

to find a good restaurant on a sunday is not so easy, i have to commit
large shops close at 19:30 during the week
pubs close their doors between 01:00 am and 04:00am in the cities
