Nasty nasty democrats ...
Quote:
Stevens, the Senate's longest-serving Republican, was indicted on on July 29 on seven counts of filing false financial disclosure forms from 1999-2006. Federal prosecutors said Stevens "knowingly and willfully engaged in a scheme to conceal" bribes from VECO Corp., including $250,000 worth of gifts and renovations for his home, in return for help in obtaining contracts and the construction of a natural gas pipeline. He is only the tenth sitting U.S. senator in history to be indicted while in office.
The 84-year old lawmaker has been part of a federal probe of the VECO corruption controversy since last year, when former VECO chief executive officer, Bill Allen, testified that the company was responsible for remodeling Stevens' home. Federal agents raided the senator's home in July 2007.
Allen's testimony was made during the trial of former Alaska Republican House Speaker Pete Kott, who was sentenced December 2007 to six years in prison for similar corruption charges. He is scheduled to take the stand for the first time in Stevens' trial late Tuesday.
The investigation of VECO has implicated other state officials. Alaska State Sen. John Cowdery was also charged in July for accepting bribes from Veco in exchange of legislative votes for certain oil and gas legislation in 2006.
