I just learned something interesting. Persians are Iranians.
Just saw a show on tv about the old Persian empire in what is now today Iran. So basically people say that they're Persian to avoid saying they're Iranian.
Do a Wikipedia search for "Persia". I would post a link but I'm new so I'm not allowed until 30 posts.
Feeling stupid yet?
I've been feeling stupid ever since I clicked on this thread. Dude, everybody on the planet who got a C or above in high school geography knows that Iranians are Persians. That's why they speak Farsi and not Arabic.
There was this big war a few years back, Iran v Iraq, winner take all cage match? Sunnis v Shiites? Any of this ring a bell? Probably not.

Most persians in Cali are pretty rich, they all drive bmw's and wear designer clothes. And they like to build huge ostentations Mcmansions in Beverly Hills.
I like McMansions though, the more ostentatious and luxurious the better!

There's even an entry for Persian Palace in Wikipedia
Persian palace" is a derisive term used by Los Angeles residents for a large mansion that occupies a disproportionately large area of the parcel on which it is built. This style of house is similar to a McMansion, but draws from Mediterranean Revival and Middle Eastern influences instead of English and French ones. While wealthy Angelenos of all ethnicities have built such edifices (particularly Taiwanese and Chinese immigrants in the San Gabriel Valley), Persian palaces get their name from the wealthy ethnic Persians who build them, primarily those who immigrated to Los Angeles's West Side after the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
[edit]
Characteristics
A Persian palace typically is a 2-story white or pink stucco-covered box incorporating architectural and decorative features from many traditions--most notably Spanish tile roofs, wrought-iron decoration, Romanesque columns and atria, bronze Middle Eastern statuary (typically of lions)--into a whole that is derided by many architects as less than the sum of its parts. (Many Persian palaces are designed by their occupants or by unlicensed architects.) As Persians have largely congregated in built-out areas such as Beverly Hills, construction of Persian palaces usually requires the demolition of the house that previously occupied the lot.

Most Iranians (the ones who dislike Islam anyway) prefer to be refered to as Persian, as Persia was a sourse for good things but Iran is the source of nothing good.
The original Persians were not Muslims. They were Zoroastrians, which is a kind of fire-worshiping religion. Zoroastrians are persecuted in Iran, as are Jews and Baha'i.
A girl I know who classes herself as Persian was arrested and thrown in prison in Iran when she went back because she brought a book into the country which was western.

I thought that was pretty crazy shit.
I think you got it backwards. I am pretty sure Persians are not Iranians, Iranians are Persian.
Did I say ALL? No I did not say ALL. I said MOST. There is a DIFFERENCE.
Not all persians, but MOST. There's nothing wrong with being rich and wear designer clothes and living in mcmansions, that's the lifestyle that I aim for.
Most persians ARE rich though because it is the ELITE persians who were able to flee the Shah in Iran. That is not a generalization. It is a FACT.
From http://www.everyculture.com/multi/Ha...Americans.html
"According to U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services figures through 1991, estimates on Iranian immigrants are much lower, totaling 200,000 Iranian immigrants entering the United States since 1978. The difference in these figures may be the result of counting only those who entered the country as immigrants, leaving out the large numbers of those entering officially as non-immigrants, including students and visitors. This group is often characterized as the former "elite" of Iran, highly educated and skilled professionals of various religions and ethnic backgrounds, many of whom have been financially successful in the United States."
If you are rich then naturally you are more likely to build bigger houses and drive fancier cars.
I will answer any questions you have about Persians ( Iranians)
The 2 words are virtually synonymous nowdays.
Generally, Persian history is said to have begun with King Cyrus the Great (the english translation for my name and one other GFY'er), who unified Persia and conquered vast tracts of land. He is also famous for liberating the Jews from captivity in Babylon around 538 BC. This information is recorded in the Bible, in the Books of Isaiah, Daniel and Ezra.
Persia = the country
Farsi or Parsi = the language
Many Americans seem to believe that Iranians are Arabs. This may be due to the fact that many people in both countries practise Islam, and that they both use the arabic alphabet. The reason Iran uses the Arabic alphabet is because it was imposed on them when the Arabs tried to conquer Iran. That is where the similarties end!

heh i totally missed this part of your post lol...
For some obscenely strange reason after reading this whole thread, and I have no idea why I read it, I still feel as if I simply don't give a flying fuck if they're persians or goat herders or even if you're living next to one.
Well - Im glad someone can find info that the western world has called Iran Persia although the real Persian Empire included Iraq and many other "states" as well as Iran.
Heres a second thing to learn today - will give you some real perspective into todays current events:
Iraq was a democracy - seems strange to hear that? Well - up until the United States helped some military generals take over Iraq 30 years ago(including installing Saddam into power with Dick Cheneys help) - Iraq had a democratic political leadership - we just took it away from them so that we could have a good pawn to fight against Iran(since they were backed by Russia at the time)
Funny how 30 years later - we are "trying" to install a democracy - guess the US leadership feels bad that they took it away???
wheres the hookah? Krosh is one awesome Persian! I have lots of friends that are Persian They are good business men and will work hard to make a good deal
