    These F****king Mexicans should be banned from owning Pets!

    I'm in Baja California, Mexico right now. This past Saturday a friend who lives here tells me about his maid's dog, who got run over by a car.
    It is an 8 month old pitbull puppy, and he's now paralized from the middle of his back down, and has numerous wounds, and they haven't taken him to the vet!
    I'm horrified, so I talk to the maid's husband and ask him why the puppy hasn't gotten medical attention. He tells me that they don't have the money. So I go: Here is my cell phone number, please call me on Monday morning and I will take him to this vet that I know. That means, "I AM PAYING FOR YOUR POOR DOG'S VET BILL!".

    It's Tuesday afternoon and nobody has called me. Can you believe these freaking animals? (and I'm not referring to the poor doggie).

    I'm so pissed off!!! The worst part is that this is not the only animal cruelty history that I have encountered here.
    They should ban every single Mexican from owning a pet!

                          I was just there this last weekend, and in the space of a few hours we saw a dead dog, a dead dolphin, and a dead horse. The horse was huge and white and just laying on the side of the highway. My boyfriend's aunt, who lives in Ensenada, has a neighbor who used to poison cats. Once she accidentally poisoned one of the aunt's chihuahuas, she switched to capturing the cats, putting them in bags, and leaving them to starve or suffocate in her trash cans. My daughter was playing with this stray puppy, which was one of a whole group of stray puppies who were pretty much afraid of everyone and covered with bugs, and it made her so sad. "Well sweetie," I told her, "that's just the way it is. There is no Animal Control in Mexico." And that's putting it mildly. It's almost like you have to stop thinking about it while you're down there, or it'll just eat you alive because there's pretty much nothing you can do about it.

                          I'll bet within an hour after we saw it, someone down there ate that damn horse.

                                                                                              It's just different down there. It's a different culture--a different world--and you can't reasonably expect to be able to apply the same standards. There are some animal shelters, but they are few and far between and mostly funded by Americans. Animal control is practically non-existent, and even then there are only so many animals you can control with no budget. Don't get me wrong, I am Mexican, and I love Mexico, and I intend to move there in a few years, but there are a lot of things there that take a lot of getting used to. The situation with animals is just one of them. There are toddlers running around in traffic down there...animals are not their first priority in a country that poor.

                                                                                              That said, I am very surprised someone didn't shoot the dog or crush its skull with a shovel or something like that. To put an animal out of its misery is the kind thing to do, even if there's no vet to take it to or no vet money and no better way to euthanize it. My boyfriend had to kill a cat with a rock in Mexicali when he was a kid because it was burned and suffering and dying. Anyone, Mexican or not, can abuse an animal, or show compassion for one. But as far as, "Oh, just call animal control," it is not nearly that simple. In Mexico, there are plenty of people who have cherished, spoiled, beloved pets. But it is a third world country, and you have to keep that in mind.

I simply couldn't get the toll plaza number.
                                                                                                                          The following day there were 3 or 4 of the horses dead about 1 mile from my home, on the side of the highway, hit by a car. It made me so mad, but there was nothing I could do.

I am not offended. I figured you probably were just mad and not thinking about the big picture. Believe me, I spent three days there last weekend, and some of the things do get to be a bit much. I thought my poor daughter was going to have a coronary over all the doomed puppies. She is fifteen and idealistic and my taxidermy collection greatly offends her. It's a good thing I don't live in Mexico yet, or I'd probably have half the dogs of Mexico in my yard. I get into a lot of trouble when it comes to taking on more deformed, unloved, homeless dogs that I can handle...but that is another thread for another day. ;-)
