I drive a 2006 CLS55 I like the styling over the M5 even though the m5 delivers better performance and drive experience.. Since I do most of my driving in the city it doesn't matter too much, the cls55 has plenty of power. The only negative with the car is that you need to go to the gas station every 200 miles the car gets around 10 miles per gallon.Comment

If you want a good standard German car, go buy a Porsche.
Standard A4/C-class/1 & 3-series = women's cars. Especially the roadsters.
Standard A6/E-class/5-series = self-employed accountant/retired/department sales manager, respectively.
Standard A8/S-class/7-series = white businessman/middle-eastern businessman/black rapper/producer
G35 - good cruiser, dead fish on the track. No biggie though as it wasn't meant to be a track car. That's what the 350Z's for.
SL - cruiser as well. Mercedes makes rubbish gearboxes though. Only 'matics. They're good on a straight line (as are most of the roads in the US), but once you need to change gear "in-speed" because you need to complete a series of corners, the gearbox starts to go into hit-and-miss mode. Mostly it misses. Even AMG Mercs have the same problem.
Audi's new S-tronic (basically VW's DSG, just rebadged) is probably the closest you'll get to a perfect manual - slash- automatic mix. I've driven the DSG Golf GTi when I was in the UK, and my only complaint (compared to the M3 CLS I test drove) was that it felt a little too clinical. No "oomph" or "kick" when the gears changed (up). There was nothing to learn. Simply switch gears and... that was it. No drama. If that's you're thing then cool. If not, then you might prefer BMW's SMG.

What is considered a safer car, mercedes or bmw according to crash tests? Anyone know? In terms of fatalities, survival rates in an accident? I was reading on mydeathspace.com about people on myspace who died and a lot of the car accidents involved a bmw which scared me.
I don't know if it's the fact that it's a popular car with younger kids who drive recklessly or are more high risk, but it worries me...Comment

Here in the US you know that Mercedes (except the E & C class), Caddilac Escalades, Hummer H2, Porsche and BMW (Other than the 3 series) are the cars to have.
Audi and 3 Series BMW's aren't really coveted by most people (over 22 at least). But over there it seems you guys do backflips for them. Thanks to this thread I see why.
