Marilyn Monroe - The hottest girl of that era

I have always loved Marilyn Monroe, she was such a stunning looking girl, such class and elegance.

Who would you say was the hottest girl of that era

                          Probably was!

Someone gave me a present of an original studio print (circa mid 50's) of her in The Seven Year Itch - the sequence of her getting a blast of air up her skirt.

The publicity pics were contrived and the skirt was "wired up" to look as tho there was air jetting out to capture the perfect image.

Growing up I never quite understood the fascination with Monroe. Sure, she was attractive...but I couldn't see what the big deal was about. I never really thought she was anything special to look at.

But now that I'm into my forties and having seen a few of her movies in recent years (watched Some Like It Hot not long ago) - I've come to appreciate her allure and mystique more. Coupled with her untimely and tragic death...its no wonder she's become such a legend.

You're absolutely right. Her fame is almost incomprehensible to us, at this remove of years. More difficult still for us to understand, I think, is the *iconic influence* she continues to exert over the culture. By many of Mcluhan's definitions, she isn't dead at all. We act as if the Media, as it is today, were the media as it has always been. How quickly we forget things like the sound of ALL AMERICA laughing at the same Norman Lear joke, at the same time.

The question before us is not "What's so special about her?"

The question ought to be "What's so special about her that has permitted her to PERSIST IN EFFECT AND RELEVANCY, and to LEAP from medium to medium?"

I totally disagree Norma Jean Baker was stupidity indemnified. several failed marriages ( Arthur Miller, and Joe Di Maggio for a start), Suppossed affairs with both JFK and Robert kennedy...The IQ of a Lentil bean and it really took a suspiscious death for her to become Immortal, and 6 toes on one of her feet.

Give me the beautiful Grace Kelly and Jane Russell anyday two of the true hollywood starletts that personified beauty elegance and charm

The studios made her an icon and she packed cinemas for several years then the public watched it all come apart very slowly and dramatically. She was a soap opera, an icon and a genuine Star all rolled into one.

More difficult still for us to understand, I think, is the *iconic influence* she continues to exert over the culture. By many of Mcluhan's definitions, she isn't dead at all. I'm left to wonder what longevity she would've had if she'd survived. Would she still be as iconic? Or would she have faded into obscurity as her movie roles got less acclaim...
