So it is a throw back to the Mayberry times? Think the great plains states around 1920's... "Mr. Drexler, can you come with us, we just have to ask you a couple of questions," said the police officer to the serial killer during his dinner at the Chateau Demoir so as not to offend the other guests.Originally posted by WebbyThe difference is Puerto Rico is US territory and not as chilled out. They have taxes for a start, - tho don't think that includes Federal taxes?
Costa Rica is a stable and peaceful country based on democratic principles. There is also considerable emphasis on indvidual freedom and privacy. Even where there is a criminal matter, personal freedom and privacy comes first. (Tho depending on the criminal nature - that personal freedom may be curtailed
)
CR also has loads more to offer in many ways - it's a kinda diverse country although it's not exactly big. Roads in CR are not as good as those in Puerto Rico, but main roads are OK. There are also no hurricane problems although the heavy rains from hurricanes may show on the Caribbean coastline.Comment

Well.. something like that, but maybe not so "blatant"Originally posted by V_RocKsSo it is a throw back to the Mayberry times? Think the great plains states around 1920's... "Mr. Drexler, can you come with us, we just have to ask you a couple of questions," said the police officer to the serial killer during his dinner at the Chateau Demoir so as not to offend the other guests.
Basically.. everyone is innocent until proven otherwise - normal stuff, - but they are entitled to whatever due consideration before being convicted.
This shows in a few ways... even on the street. Cops are not "overpowering" or "aggressive". This in turn makes them more friendly. (And sure as hell - they helped me in several instances more than any "western cop" - including getting covered in mud in the process). Another example... I fucked up and reversed into a police car. What do we do? Go along to a body panel store then a bodyshop and a respray unit - then they are back on the road working. Cost? Under $300. Traffic offenses? Na.. none - it was an accident.
Even with drug dealing.. the law may not raid a set of premises in the middle of the night since any person, including drug dealers, are "entitled to their rights of sleep"
(Sure, they can and will raid if there is some "activity" going on related to criminal action.)
Other example.. when there is an election, armed police officers (or anyone) are not permitted within X distance of a polling station. The practicalities of elections are monitored by school teachers with the children as vote counters. Gotta be among the most peaceful elections anywhere - and no problems - at least, so far.
Judges here are *very* fussy about "procedures" and the law is certainly not "oppressive", but appears to be the complete opposite.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

That's not the general idea or in the spirit of freedom crockettOriginally posted by crockettSo you could spam from CR with no worries in other words
In practice.. there was a hell of a lot of spamming going on from here a few years back (and prob still is to a degree). The main ISP terminated the bulk of this and it's (tho never checked), probably down to a managable level. There is no actual law against spamming tho, but maybe if it grows and starts to be a problem - they may end up introducing legislation.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

so in other words as long as you aren't scamming people you probably wouldn't get in too much trouble.Originally posted by WebbyThat's not the general idea or in the spirit of freedom crockett

Basically, all points are true. I live in San Pedro, very quiet and private. After a year and a half, I'm kinda bored of Costa Rica. I mean it's OK, average ppl are nice, life is pretty decent. If one knows how to keep his ass out of trouble, it's a peaceful place. Don't get involved too much with locals, especially those met when partying at night, because you can get easily robbed or worse. Guns are pretty much everywhere and the latino blood flows quicker than it should be, especially when women are involved. I mean, stay away from local's girlfriends. Anyway, for my taste is a small place, very interesting, but with clear limitations. I'm kinda been there, done that, time to fly away.Originally posted by AdultInsider Cloner1. Tica's (Costa Rican women) can be very aggressive...if they like you, you'll know it =p
2. You don't need to speak the local language to pick up a girl....body language rules!
3. You can either live very cheaply or at just below normal US prices.
4. Tico's wield cars like weapons.
5. Most non-tica's have zero interest in non-tico men...so if you wanna come down here to pick up European and American women, you're outta luck for the most part.
6. You can go out all night, buy your friends multiple rounds of drinks and walk out spending less than $30.
7. It's cheaper to buy a beer, than a Diet Coke.
8. You can take a weekend trip to the Caribbean for under $80.
9. There are NO street addresses. My current address is one block east of the BurgerKing and one block north of the corner store.
10. Cable internet is going to cost me almost a third of what I pay for rent.....but rent is around $275 for a 2 bedroom.Comment

That can be a sensitive issue mainly due to others coming into the country and trying to run all kinds of serious scams in the past - and then being thrown out or, in the case of US citizens, chucked on a special plane and escorted back to the US for trial re other offenses.
Any webmastering or related type stuff is no problem and nobody bothers ya.
It is far better to get financing outside CR - it's far cheaper. Like.. if you are a US citizen, there are companies specializing on finance rates which are more in line with the US than expensive local rates.
The local currency is colonnes, but better to keep funds in.. eg dollar or Euro accounts and only change currencies as needed. Both colonnes and $US are commonly accepted in stores etc.
Most of the banks here are foreign owned - around 84% - the major one being Scotia Bank (Canadia).XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment
