Wonder if there's a historical direct relation to the US spending on military and the terrorist acts against it.

Also, wonder what the country would be like if all that military spending was used when spent on the actual country (healthcare, education, local impoverished).

I wonder about a lot of stuff, I guess.

The ole guns and butter argument. It is necessary for the US to spend the large $ because so many other countries aren't. Let's take the Aussies for example. You're flying good ole US F-18s and F-15s. Development paid for by the US and not Australia.

That's just an example. Maybe 12clicks or KRL will hit the thread and throw out some more stats.

yea, I was going to make that point. If the US didn't spend money on the military, there would likely only be 3 or maybe 4 different countries on that chart to compare. Unless you divide it up and show spending for "country that used to be known as France", or however you would say that in German.

I imagine that person that started this thread either is pro comunism or hasn't studied a fellow by the name of Ronald Reagan. My tax dollars changed the world for many people. Your welcome.

That don't stand up either pussyluver.

Other countries buy and pay for that military technology - with an inbuilt price for development. It's not exactly given away for free.

The only two actual areas where trade surpluses do exist in the US is in the area of arms and wheat. Arms manufacture provides both employment in the US and a major source of external revenue.

In fact... the US exports more arms to the rest of the world than all other nations combined.

That said, the cost of developing and maintaining the worlds super power costs the US taxpayer. Just because there is a surplus in exports really doesn't prove anything. You expect me to swallow that all the exports of military hardware were a net gain for the US? Give me a break.

There are all those loans for shipped goods that are never paid. At least the stock holders got their money there.

Who would step in and protect a countrry from invasion from China, Iran or North Korea? Are the Assuies, Brits or Japanese prepared to totally defend themselves? Let's throw in a number of other countries such as Canada, Mexico, Czech Republic, France and so on. Point is, The US is the brick wall the real bad guys have to face.

The free world needs the US even with its faults.

BTW dunefield... tho the legend on that graph is headed "Military Spending", it's not clear whether this is actual military spending or deviant costs built in to cover the manufacture of weaponary which is subsequently sold to other nations.

Weapons manufacture, development and arms trading is an entirely different biz and a massive profit center.

Tho either way, it's still going to be totally absurd considering other unattended to and more relevant priorities.

Shit.. the US spends 18-20% of the total national budget on military costs. If that ain't fucked up - nothing is.

There are 1.3 Billion people in China with a growing thirst for resources. There's is a different society. If it wasn't for the might of the US, they would be more proactive in gaining assets. Taiwan for example. The US adds balance.

                                          Mexico already won...

Better yet, lets not spend it all, or for that matter take it from the people.

Shit.. the US spends 18-20% of the total national budget on military costs. If that ain't fucked up - nothing is.

shit, like i said before, that pays people's salaries..

would you rather they spend none and have poverty kick in big time for those pople?

It may be a better clue to invest in manufacturing ability and work towards paying off the daily loans by other nations and moving towards having any trade surplus than being known as the world's biggest arms trader.

Living off the "national credit card" is not sustainable.

Fuck it - might as well get China to manufacture the helmets as well - least it gives some more folks a job. Haliburton can arrange the contract tho

Something else to think about. Right now the North Koreans have a missile on a launch pad that will be a test, deliver a warhead someplace or put a satellite in space. The US has satellites watching the site, ships at sea monitoring communications etc. All that cost $$$. What other nations have the ability to provide the world of key information such as launch and where the damn thing is headed. Who else even has a chance at shooting it down?

If it hits Japan, would that country have the ability to go to war with N. Korea? We limited their military mission at the the end of WWII....

Oh, I know!!! CNN will cover the launch if it happens.

Why you fear so much pl? Terrorism is nothing new and will still exist centuries after we have all gone.

I never heard North Korea, Iran or China had any plans to launch attacks specifically on the US (or the Netherlands over moral issues) - did you?

China spends about $62 billion annually for military purposes (not far off the UK and Russia). It may take a little more to engage in mass warfare with the rest of the world. This still leaves the US spending around $420 billion in fear some other nation tops em at something.

It's hardly sane for any nation who have only around 4%+ of the worlds population but spend 43% of the world total spending on military costs.

To maintain this unreality, the US borrows around $10billion daily from other nations - and where $2-$4billion is being financed by that arch evil nation - the Central Bank of China. Something is amiss somewhere?
