I think what you're looking for is Wing Chun. It doesn't require you to be excessively strong or make karate-like kicks and superman moves. Very effective.
It's not a matter of which martial art is best, it's a matter of which martial arts suits you best.
Wing Chun is useless. Chain punching does nothing.
Empirical data. Wing Chun guy vs BJJ guy, John Marsh.
Kung fu guy tried to eye gouge, poke his nose, and WC got fucked.
a lot of the posts here are (from what i know) about methods that are more aggressive.
jkd is highly passive and pretty much will only teach you to block and attack when the attacker is on the assault. you won't learn any methods for first strike.
if this interests you, jkd is very easy to learn and doesn't require much physical strength (there were many women in my classes) to become very effective in protecting yourself and disarming an attacker.
a guy with a knife, with bad intentions, is gonna gut an unarmed man 999 times out of 1000
If the guy with the knife knows what he's doing, in 99,9% of the cases you won't even see the knife before it's to late. If the guy with the knife goes all "hey look at me, i'm dangerous cuz i've got a knife", your changes are alot better than 1:1000 (if you've got the necessary training).
BJJ beats all single martial arts. My proof is UFC 1 through 4.
MMA beats all Traditional Martial Arts, this was made evident in the last UFC, Hughes vs Gracie.
Awaiting your rebuttal.
I'm not going in discussion with you... you'd probably outpost me with all your movie evidence anyways (see countless of other threads involving martial arts that you're in).
You seem to be stuck in your own little box. Nothing I say will or can convince you otherwise.

Mate,
You are runnning away because you cannot defend your position.
What WC/VT/WV or whattever wing chun variant fighter has ever won anything in a cage or ring Modern MMA?

None. Why is that?
Because it doesn't work, maybe?!
Why would I need to defend my position against you? What would I gain by doing that? I'm not here for an ego rush. I am merely in this thread to make a suggestion to the thread poster. He will decide what he's most comfortable with.

So, you are comfortable giving advice that might get his face kicked in?

I don't feel responsible for other people's actions, therefore I'm quite comfortable making a suggestion. Would you have sleepless nights if he got beaten or worse got killed whilst having perfected BJJ? I hope you would still be ok.

Neither do I, but if I am going to give advice, I won't give bad advice.

Whether any advice given turns out to work in his favour will depend not only on his skill and dedication, but amongst others on the opponent and the circumstances that he will be in. Don't be prejudiced. The good thing about this thread is that he has a number of suggestions he can now explore.
When mastered nothing will beat aikido, but it will take you at least 20 years to master it. I know two masters and you wouldn't believe the shit they can do.
Short term I would say Shootfighting or Jiu Jitsu.
As for UFC and other similar competitions, they never get the best since in many martial arts competing is considered wrong.
I would however say that state of mind is more important than technique; I have seen people on adrenaline rushes easily take down ppl that have practiced martial arts for tens of years.

SSP,
You make the best argument for this thread, and I am happy to report, I agree with you.
While they're is many valid posts in this thread I will add some more.
Psili had the best one...dont get in fights...dont put yourself in fights...this is at the core of Goju-Ryu Karate i studied for 8 years, member of the Butokukai under a devout sensei who was under Gogen Yamaguchi
Anthony- run from knives....very good advice.
SSp - also great post. Adenaline does play a roll and ... like they say..."Its not the size of the dog in the fight...its the size of the fight in the dog"
heres my observations from reading all of the above input.
To say cetain martial arts are useless is a blind post not having been one on one with a master of the art...thats just foolish.
Miyamoto Musashi was the greatest swordman in all of Japa apparently and he says , "know your enamy and know yourself...in a hundred battles you will never lose...." read the book of five rings to find out the rest. he wrote it. he lived it. those fights were over in a blink of the sun across the blade of a sword. I think ill believe him.
No master (mental and physical ) of most ancient martial arts would ever enter a contest with something to prove. The philosophy is against it...so most of you havent seen nothing of most arts. You'd have to really out wit them to accomplish this... whatever the style...it will probably never or somewhere around the odds of a solar eclipse. They are that smart.
As for BJJ it does seem to be dominant in a ring...but picture this...you and your BJJ buddy are getting in a fight with 5 street fighters outside a bar...I hope you can incapacitate all off them at once ...because if you think the other guys are going to stand around while you twist the one guys arms and legs off I would also be practicing religeon. But , on the other hand I do not discredit it, just bring up a scenario....I also have a few years in BJJ as well as most karate and such dojos are now learning it and implementing it...the basic were there from Judo anyways...
I know study Muay Thai for fun and competition
Ill let my spirit take care of situations in the street need be...
Very good topic...
Anthony is correct, BJJ is the best martial art, and anyone who has at least a 65 IQ should know this from all the NHB that's gone down since Rorion Gracie started the UFC about 10 years ago.
Kung Fu is next to useless. So are most of the other arts besides muay thai, BJJ, wrestling and boxing. They developed for too long in a non fighting environment.
Krav Maga, like Jeet Kune Do, is a made up art. It's nothing. It's whatever the instructor says it is. Rorion went on a trip, several of them in fact, to train the Israeli troops on ground fighting. Now BJJ is part of 'Krav Maga' lol.... If you pick up a chair and bash someone over the head with it and call it Krav Maga or Jeet Kune Do, then that's what it is. Same thing the instructors do, why not you?

Because he'd get his head torn off.
You're fucked no matter what you know against 5 guys.
You're fucked no matter what you know against 5 guys.
No you don't.
Agreed, there is always the "Any Given Sunday" factor which no one can escape. The question was what martial arts are best, not well what if this, or what if that? To me it's what ever is practical for the situation at hand. 10 out of 9 times one on one it'd be BJJ, Boxing or Muay Thai or some combination of. Against five guys, I may want my Kalahi bro from the Philipines and some of his sticks.

One of my friends who is a martial arts instructor was harrased in the street once, by four men. They started to push him about and he knew that they were out to kick his ass just for the sake of it.
His mind decided not to run and he said to the strongest boldest looking of the bunch: "Hey man, how many red M&Ms are there in a bag?". This question completely took away the guys attention for a split second and in that very second he started pounding away on him as hard as he could. He didn't stop beating him even when the guy was down on the ground.
His buddies were so shocked that the strongest of the pack was getting his ass whooped that they did not have the nerves to do anything anymore. They backed off apologizing. After this, my friend ran home on the last bit of adrenaline he had left.
Fortunately for him, even though he was seemingly overpowered, he managed to turn the situation to his favour. Having studied martial arts and knowing some of the street combat principles, he did the right thing by going after the strongest first. His mind decided to stay and defend. It could have decided to run as fast as he could but it didn't. A decision like this will be made in a nanosecond. After this, you better be prepared.

don't take this the wrong way but I find this story very hard to believe
i was once getting my ass handed to me after a bar..i was most likely being an ass....anyway three guys had taken me around the corner from everyone and were trying to kick the shit out of me....i kept myself really close to themand tried to keep two of them in a headlock..we struggled and then out of the blue
this guys head came into the midst of all of us...he asked me how i was doing...lol he was the bouncer at the bar i had been in....anyway he took great offense to these three guys and before i knew it they were flying across the little alleyway, smashing off the walls. he chased them into the street...caught one picked him up and threw him towards his friends
I heard one like it before, but instead of red M&M's the guy was asked how do you make change for a penny.
I just posted it as an anecdote. My friend is in fact a martial arts instructor but also known for his jokes and urban legends, so it might well be a myth. I just thought it fitted in the thread.
