    My Father's Day Gift From My 6 Year Old

    My son is so sentimental already. He's only 6 years old but he knows how to melt me.

    He's been cooking with his mommy since he was old enough to help. He asked her if he could make me a big heart-shaped cookie. She supervised, but he made the entire thing himself.

    He also made me a card and decorated his mommy's house for me with crepe paper streamers all over.

    It doesn't get any better.

                                                              I am hoping the teen years go a little better for us. I'm sure we'll have problems but I think they'll be minimized because of the way we're parenting him.

                                                              Let me give you an example: I've never once in his life raised my voice to him. And I have NEVER used the words "because I said so". And I do not spank him either.

                                                              I paid attention in the pyschology classes I took in college and am always thinking about things. One thing I truly believe is that children are people too and should be treated as such. When someone yells at me I get angry at them. But if someone has a concern and talks to me in a nice tone of voice I'm much more likely to do as they ask. That is what I do with my son. If I need to correct him I get down on my knees at his eye level and tell him why I don't think he should do X or Y. If he is a little rowdy I tell him so and ask him to calm down, even if it takes a few times. I do this calmly. And if he needs to be corrected while around a group of people I get down on my knees, give him a big hug and whisper in his ear so that he's not embarrassed. It has worked so far.

                                                              I'm hoping that treating him like a HUMAN (instead of a slave like most people treat their kids) will minimize future problems. They'll arise, and I'll change to meet the challenges.

                                                              At least that's the plan.

                                                                  That is so great, I love it when they just "take the time", that means more to me than anything. I am the MOM, but they do this kind of thing for me and my husband on every holiday. It's great, isn't it?

                                                                      OH GOD, it so will help him in later years, trust me. We have always treated our kids like they were PEOPLE....... and it has helped. I have kids ages 21, 17, 12 and 8 and trust me when I tell you that this is crucial. We NEVER EVER discipline our kids in front of people, not to embarrass them anyway. We do ask that they be nice or something, or be respectful, but that's it. They are people and sometimes parents forget about this.

                                                                      Anything that will impact their lives, like a major move or something, we talk to them BEFORE we make a final decision and give them an option to speak their minds about it. We talk to them about anything that impacts them..... and we TEACH them.... that's a big thing, TEACH them to be respectful and good and they will. They need and thrive on discipline, but GOOD discipline, not abusive or abrasive discipline. We ALWAYS give them a chance to speak their minds, but they aren't allowed to raise their voices in order to do it. Talk to us as people and we treat you as people........

                                                                                  It is amazing, yes. Better than any purchased gift could ever be. I know that he was thinking of what he wanted to do for me, thinking about me and talking to his mommy about me while he made the cookie, and anticipating how happy it would make me as he decorated the house. I can see his cute little face as he did all these things. I know exactly how he looked.

                                                                                      My youngest spent a whole day working her little 8 yr old heart out on something, trying to keep everyone from seeing it. SongRider had left to go to band practice or something and when he got back, and I didn't even see her do this...... but she made a cut out of HER vision of her dad. This cutout looked like him, in her head, she had made a cutout of a guitar and glued it to it, made it look like he was playing guitar and went in there very quietly and set it gently down in his office chair so that would be the first thing he seen when he went to check his ebay stuff. It was so sweet.... the look on BOTH their faces was so priceless.

                                                                                      When holidays approach, she makes a whole week long process out of them, bringing us cards, making cakes or cookies or whatever, doing OUR chores for us, and things like that.. she is ever so mindful of US..... all of my kids are, but she is the one that's the most mindful of how WE feel.
