Are there any Flash Flip Porn Magazine?

Just wondering if anyone has done a website or online magazine in the Flash Flip page software.

Here is a basic example from a sports magazine:

    http://www.epickitemag.com/epic_kite...ag_summer.html

Its not porn but I am talking about the technology behind it.

Has anyone tried and if not why not?

    Cheers,
    Vlad

Playboy UK tried it and it was a total failure. Thankfully it wasn't my idea!

The technology is old now. But more importantly than that it is fundamentally a shit idea imho. Think about it.

The web is not a magazine. People READ online very differently from offline. Why on earth would you try and cram a magazine layout for A4 into a screen?

The page turning animation is cute for about the first 3 pages, then is annoying and pointless.

Design a magazine for online use, sure, but design it for online use. I mean, as that example you posted loads, you get to read how to actually navigate it. If your nav needs explaining, it's broken.

In my humble opinion, as ever.

Good points..... I am just doing some research into the idea and these are good points...

What about the fact that you can download them?

Also a feature I saw that you can embedd vids and also have the pics enlarge when clicked?

        Any more thoughts?

Will try to find info on Playboy UK...

          This is what PB did:

          http://www.bamboomagazine.co.uk/

Yes, you can embed vids etc. But, you can do all that with a PDF too. And make it designed to be read on screen. And be totally readable by spiders.

I think some really good and usable PDF design is on www.changethis.com and example of what I mean is here

            Very cool cheers.

Looks like bamboo did 2 issues and then stopped in 2007.

            It looks pretty good tho.

It just seems like it should work.

            Downloadable for offline reading
Readable on mobile devices - Phones, PDAs, etc

But it seems that there is no success so far with it even with the big guys.

My uncle has a piece of software that they developed that would be perfect for this. I did pass along info for him to contact Playboy, but not sure if anything came of it. They are all in Sacramento area, so it made some sense.

Anyhow, here's the script. It's able to be spidered and searched.

The reason is simple. Try and READ it. You can't. It's appaling for a user experience.

It looks pretty. The page turning is cool for 2 minutes. Then you realise in terms of USABILITY (ie actually reading the bloody thing) it's useless.

If you want something to download, then a PDF would be fine no?
IF you want something that degrades gracefully on mobile devices a page turning flash thing CERTAINLY isn't it.

I am not sure what you are trying to achieve so it's hard to comment. But if your goals are to provide something downloadable and readable offline, that also degrades for mobile, then you are looking at the wrong thing with this!

Remember, this technology has been around for YEARS. Started with (I believe) the Zinio 'magazine' reader at least 10 years ago. Was meant to be the holy grail for offline publishers.

Can you name me just one publisher that has used this model to SUCCESSFULLY move a magazine online? With tangible results? In ten years?

                No.

Because it is a shit idea, badly executed.

(btw, I HATE THESE THINGS, you may have noticed!!!)

I've thought about doing this for years and realize it's just old school. Would have been cool to do in 1996. Linear navigation doesn't translate well to the interwebs.

I am just exploring different ideas... And I haven't seen anyone use it and wondered why.

I was approached by some offline mags about helping them move online and they want to run with a similar technology they developed.

Looking at Pros and Cons and why noone is doing it.

So I am just looking for info and I appreciate all of it!

                          I kinda disagree here.

If I am doing some one handed surfing. I just want one button to click. Forward for more porn. But I do see what you are saying.

A bunch of offline magazines offer an online digital version and what did it do?

It opened up a new market of pirated magazines on rapidshare and torrents.

If you have offline clients willing to pay you or split profits then I'd say go for it. It's a sellable concept to the client.

Absolutley right. If you have a clueless offline publisher, to him the pitch is simple.

Take the PDF you sent to print, send them to us too, we'll make a really cool flash version - LOOK THE PAGES TURN.

It's only a later that you realise your actual readers hate it.

If you want to make a fast buck off an idiot, cool. If you want to help someone move an offline property online effectively, it's not such a good look.

                                  IMHO.

Thanks for all the input guys...

It looks like there will be a combo of traditional online websites and the magazine style.

There will be a 60+ page magazine like this and support site that use the more traditional websites: blogs, galleries and such so the users can pic their delivery format.

I started asking end users to review it and so far the split is almost 50/50 flip mag vs websites. People seem to like the fact that you can flip the pages ( I am sure this will wear off as mentioned above) and they like the fact that its downloadable in PDF for offline viewing. I also heard lots of comments saying they felt like they were reading a real magazine which they seemed to like since they didn't read much offline.

Again thanks for all the input and I am always looking for more on this.

                                    Cheers
