I'm new to this board and I want to say hello to everybody.
I have had some short-lived adult sites around 1997 in the days of free money, where all you had to do is create a gallery and get it onto PersianKitty.com, sit back and watch the money come in. I also remember having an ugly web page with big bold bright yellow text links that sent the surfer to top lists and traffic trades. They called it "circle jerking," for jerking the surfer around in a circle of garbage sites.
Top lists became extremely hot all of a sudden. Porn sites morphed into Top 50s/Top 100s or at least added a small Top 5 refferer section on the side. I believe the industry-standard script (called SplitInfinity, IIRC) sold for about $1K.
Things have changed somewhat since. You still have your simple gallery pages, but you also have TGPs that run sophisticated software, and high proliferation of fly-by-night adult sites and affiliate programs, and very specific NICHE based sites, whereas all I remember back then were Babes, Amateur, Hardcore and Teens. The design and techincal sophistication of adult sites has increased dramatically since those years, and the adult sector of the Internet remains king in these areas.
Most websites and BIG affiliate programs are still here, but some like Cliffy's are gone. The only webmaster board I knew of back then was YNOT and was not noob-friendly. Now there are several good ones.
From other threads I know that this industry has matured like any other, but I'm sure it's still possible to make a living in the adult business with serious effort, ingenuity, creativity, and luck.
It's good to be here.
