China put forty BILLION dollars into not only putting on these games but towards insuring that they win the most medals.
That's more money into their sports programs than all other countries combined and then multiplied a few times. And China's system of athlete selection is vastly different than that of the US, UK, Canada, Aussies etc. Theirs is engineered to advance only "gifted" athletes, and they obviously have a massive population on which to draw from.
With that kind of funding and determination to dominate they are going to be tough to beat from here on out. China is the new Russia.
