There's a few of us out there who look at the Olympics as a global event and use it as an opportunity to put away our nationalistic viewpoints and concentrate on a global perspective.

They're not talking about it at all, probably because they ( American media ) all twisted the stats to where we didn't lose.. instead of the most golds being the stat used to determine who 'won' the olympics, everyone in the US is using total medal count. Personally though, I couldn't care less - China has 5 times as many people as us and they manufacture their athletes from the time they're 3 years old.Comment

Interesting take on the US from a foreign perspective - I've always looked at the events, not at medal totals - with a population of 1.3 billion one might expect the Chinese medal count to be about 100%...
Is anyone in Brazil talking about the volleyball loss to the US? I am sure Brazil was disappointed not to win gold, but does that make the country of Brazil a loser?

Yep ...... China is growing faster than most other countries (India is not far behind in % growth terms) but China is still a 4 trillion GDP at most. USA is 13 trillion GDP. It could take China 20 years to overtake.

Maybe so but then shouldn't you consider that the US only has about 300 million people compared to China's 1.33 BILLION? That's over a billion more people than the US has. Honestly it's amazing that the US got as many medals as we did considering the pool of athletes China had to choose from.I like pie.Comment

That's the beauty about the Olympics. If you divided the amount of gold medals by the country population, countries like Australia would win, and the US would have a hard time getting in the top 10 because of tiny countries with a single gold medal.
If you divide the medals by the population, you'd ALWAYS lose. But this time you guys really lost by a metrics that YOU created. And now, you guys are trying to change the metric!

I don't care if we won any metals or any golds, or even went. Not because it's in China, but because it's just another game, like the kids playing football in the street yesterday. It doesn't make a single difference about anything other than to the people doing it, which is good thing for them and them alone.
Overall people care about every sport way to damn much. People going nuts, as if life ends to just watch the stupid sport and if it doesn't go as planed the day is ruined.

China put forty BILLION dollars into not only putting on these games but towards insuring that they win the most medals.
That's more money into their sports programs than all other countries combined and then multiplied a few times. And China's system of athlete selection is vastly different than that of the US, UK, Canada, Aussies etc. Theirs is engineered to advance only "gifted" athletes, and they obviously have a massive population on which to draw from.

If you want to be an athlete here in Brazil you have to finance your own training. Even companies don't support it since there's no fiscal retribution.
Athletes down here in Brazil are true heroes.

So, genius, exactly which formula did you use to derive your conclusion?
Better yet, what variables did you include:
- population
- total number of athletes
- total number of events
- number of athletes/event
- total dollars spent on training etc
It's the same flawed thinking as those that believe Canada lost to the US.
Here's something basic enough that even you can understand:
the importance difference in population makes!
Example: Canada to US = 10 times less!!!
Yes, that IS important since is clearly tells us the US has a much a deeper (gene/athlete) pool. By the time Canada has acquired one hopeful, the US has already been training 10!
Now, add to that the variables which help increase or decrease the advantage:
- total $ spent on training
- total $ spent on aids (swim suits, additional training facilities and the many others which not all can afford)
So, before opening your yap to say whom lost and won, take in to consideration all the variables. Or are you saying you already took in to consideration the fact that China has around 1 billion more people, and their sports concentration camps (training regimes) are virtually second to none?
An intelligent person would not say "" ... blah blah they lost ... " or " ... blah blah they won ...".
But for your sake:
the US (300+mil) only beat Canada (30mil) if the US medal count is more than ten times that of Canada!
China (1.3bil) only beat US (300+mil) if their medal count is four times greater.
