    Nostalgic journey back in time...[PICS]

    After a half dozen attempts over the past ten years - I finally got permission from the new developer to revisit (and photograph) the old High School - just slightly ahead of the wrecking ball.

    The 130-year-old school has been abandoned and derelict for over 20 years...and slated for demolition to make way for condos and retirement villas.

      Wow. That is a pretty cool experience. I still have vivid dreams of being in high school. I'll bet that was a deep feeling to you to go in there and photograph that.

                  OK personality trait about to pop out with silly question.
                  Do you know if the developer has arranged for any recycling of some of the materials or will it all be wrecked?
                  Just curious looking even at what is left of the gym floor.

                      Good question - I'm not sure at this point.

                      So far the developer has only gotten to the stage of submitting two initial proposals to city council. I guess a lot will depend on the timeframe involved and whether he wants to make the effort to recycle any materials. It might be more costly in labour and time to strip out what's reusable.

                      Time will tell. I'll keep tabs on things as they develop.

                      Meanwhile, copper thieves continue to break in to the property on a nightly basis and ransack whatever they can.

                          A few days ago the caretaker of the building had to call in a beekeeper (and the fire dept) to remove a 4-foot by 3-foot bee hive hidden between a window and the outer boards.

                          They estimated there was over 70,000 honeybees in the colony - and figured it was becoming a public safety hazard. The bees were still fairly pissed off today while I was takin' the pics.

                                                                  That about sums up my highschool daze.

                                                                  Naw, I didn't do a lot of reminiscing - mostly concentrated on getting some interesting shots. At one point in the gym I stopped and did the 'Al Bundy glory days' nostalgia, but that was all.

                                                                  I will say, though...it was weird being the only one in the entire empty building.

                                                                  Like Will Smith in 'I Am Legend'.

                                                                          Wow there is alot of things in there to strip metal from.

                                                                          If I lived in that area the place would have been stripped well before hand of the metals. Lots of money in recovered metal.

                                                                          Friend of mine does it legally and does very well.
