At least, that's how it seemed. I know we have a lot of pet owners out there. Any of you experience this?
My cat's been having some health issues, mostly stones in her bladder. She started peeing blood pretty heavily one night so we took her to an all-night emergency care clinic. They wasted three or four hours of our time then gave us a bill for $300+ and a bottle of drops for the infection. They also gave us some x-rays and the news that the cat needs surgery.
So, things go downhill. The cat is getting violently ill from the medicine and loses > 10% of her body weight in a few days. Back to the vet, new medicine, another big bill. The new medicine seems to work better, but the cat doesn't seem to be up to speed. We get her on a special diet while we work out plans for the (expensive) surgery she apparently needs.
Anyway, the cat's not quite well and we're a little worried about her. A week or so ago, I wake up one morning and find the cat curled up at my feet. That's not unusual, but for some reason I feel apprehensive. I call her name and she doesn't budge. That is unusual. My cat is very skittish and very responsive to sounds, action around her, etc. I call her name a couple more times and she doesn't even flicker an ear. I nudge her with my foot and she doesn't respond at all. Now, I am worried.
I sit up and lean toward her. Instead of being half-open and fluttery like they are nearly 100% of the time when the cat is sleeping, her eyes are completely shut. In nearly five years, I have never seen her eyes closed so tight that I couldn't see a little slit between the lids. I tap her back and say her name again, she doesn't move. I stare carefully at her belly but can't see any movement at all. I put my hand on her chest/belly and cannot feel any heartbeat. She's still warm but it's not looking good. Finally, I tap her head and I don't do it gently. No response. I tap her and shake her a few more times and get NOTHING. Finally, I lift her head up and she is completely limp, like a damp rag. I drop her head and her eyelids don't so much as flicker. I pick up the upper portion of her body and dorp it the few inches to the bed, no response. I take one last feel for vitals but can't feel or hear either heartbeat or breathing. A few last shakes and calls of her name and I give up.
I get out of bed and pick up my cell phone. I now have the unpleasant task of informing the significant other that the cat has died and also of arranging for disposal. I look at the cat, she hasn't flinched the whole time. I take six or seven steps out to the living room, punching in a phone number on my cell, and just as I hit "Call", I hear a thump in the bedroom behind me and my cat comes flying out of the bedroom, whips past my legs, screeches to a halt, looks up at me and says, quote, "Meow?"
Bizarre.
