Home Video Geeks: Is the HDMI cable worth buying?

HDMI seems to be getting popular over the past year. Both of my TVs have a HDMI slot and I just ordered a new DVD player that supports HDMI connections. However, HDMI cables are around $120. Thats a chunk of change for an 8 ft. cable.

Anybody using HDMI yet? Is it a noticeable difference from say an S or DVI cable?

Yes its worth it, and get it on ebay. Cables are one of the most marked up items at a retail store.

I see some HDMIs on ebay right now for $1-$30.

S video is crap, DVIs are good, HDMI is a bit better than DVI, but I can barley tell.

Holy shit. I can't believe it. I'm seeing a 3 ft. cable with a Buy It Now for $0.99. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the tip. Now I need a new receiver, haha. Toys get expensive, eh?

umm, composite is just regular RCA cables (yellow for video, red and white for left and right audio).. Did you mean component video? (red, green, blue)

so composite video is the lowest you can go in this case.

composite is for analog, not digital.

                          s-video, component, hdmi is digital

spend as much on cables as you can afford think about it as putting crap tires on a expensive car.

also surge protection for what its worth get a good one that covers all components tied into the new tv. some regulate the current which will make your electronics last longer house current is shit.

composite cables is just that....combo video/audio

break it out S video at least and go HDMI for 100% digital no loss

                            or something like that

That just hasn't been my experience with my HD Big Screens. I've used $150 monster hdmi cables and $20 hdmi cables with absolutely no discernable picture difference in high definition. I've got one big screen DLP on component cables right now and the high def picture is breathtaking. I'd go with a relatively inexpensive hdmi cable, I've seen some links where to buy them over at avsforum.com

Never buy your cables from Best Buy type place's. They markup the hell out of them. And Monster cables are just a marketing scam, just like Bose

With digital signals, either the digital data gets there intact (without degradation or signal loss), or it doesn't, so if it gets there with a $2 cable, the quality would be no different than with a $200 cable.

HDMI also lets you send the audio and video down the same physical cable, so that's another advantage. The big disadvantage is that HDMI is going to be used to lock down digital devices, so the consumers will eventually lose out in the end.

More info on HDMI is available here.
