I'm considering it for a new site. What's the learning curve like? Any good extensions I should know about?
Anyone experienced with Joomla?

You may also want to check out these plugins/addonsPersonally I'm a big fan of Joomla with Menalto Gallery for video and images. It's easy to set up and fairly slim as far as what is included with the base CMS, however there are tons of compontents you can use with it. Both Joomla and Gallery are free downloads so you can't beat the cost.
Check out joomla here... www.joomla.org
Check out Gallery here... gallery.menalto.com

I'm also planning on using it for an upcoming projectComment

That would actually be pretty awesome to witness!
In the case of the site I have in mind, it's probably justified. I need to incorporate news, reviews, advertising and community interactions.Comment

What made me consider joomla over drupal was I heard people reckon joomla has more of a future and a thriving extensions community. That being said I've also heard drupal is more search engine friendly out of the box and, perhaps, better for a community site.Comment

Not really ... Set up is traight forward . Developping the site has a learning curve, and works a bit " upside down " ... You need the create menus, categories, then content and only then you can structure it.
As for SEO, it has integrated module ( controlled by an .htaccess file ) or there are a few paying modules to generate search engine friendly pages.I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !

I have memberships with these sites:

I love Joomla and have been using it on sites for local small business clients for a while.Comment

Sounds good. Have to admit I work long hours but when it comes to fiddling with new things I tend to get a little lazy. I've had good success with wordpress sites so my natural inclination is always wp. This time around I feel like a change though. I'm tired of all my sites looking the same and competing sites are pretty impressive-looking.Not really ... Set up is traight forward . I'll have a look at the seo modules. Thanks for answering my questions.Comment

I use joomla for all of my mainstream sites and candyflip is right - use those sites for templates if you don't "need" a custom one done.
My hometown in Alabama is Tallassee and I just happen to own the domain
http://www.tallassee.com - it's Joomla with a few extensions. On my recent trip down prior to the tradeshow in Florida, I met with the Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor and he agreed to make my site the official website of the town

I'll sell advertising on the site later down the road and can make a few hundred bucks/month with the site. Not too bad for a site I run as a hobby.Comment

I'm definitely going to be using joomla now; so pleased I made this post. The great thing about making these kind of threads is, if you're lucky, you get given all the best and most relevant info. And yes I'll go with a template for now.I use joomla for all of my mainstream sites and candyflip is right - use those sites for templates if you don't "need" a custom one done.

Congratulations on the successful site! (I've just been looking at your photo section and wishing I could be your neighbor) Portal sites can be lucrative and you have one helluva portal right there. I actually read about a similar business model recently but your site is vastly better than that used in the model (and I think most of us would kill for a domain like that). The guy would setup professional-looking blogs in key geographic areas. Seo them and add content until traffic was flowing nicely and then he'd sell reviews, business plugs and directory listings. I don't recall figures but he did well.Comment

Joomla rocks. Most all of my main sites are Joomla powered.
It's better that Droopal or WordPress, by far - trust me, I know from experience.

What makes it better than Wordpress?
Anyone know if Joomla would better manage http://thedocblog.com ? I had to do some pretty serious custom changes to make WP do this, but it looks like Joomla may do it all already.
kick ass, db error on my blog! love'in it

It's more of a CMS/Community/Portal setup as opposed to Wordpress' Blog/CMS setup. What makes it better than Wordpress?
