normally 30 days. you can pre-purchase it with the likes of godaddy, but there's no certainty you'll get it.

all domains I've let expire the last year or so have been bought by the registrar, I guess they think if someone bought it in the first place, then someone might want it again.

the registrars put them all up for auction first and if nobody wants them then they sell them cheap, and then if still nobody wants them, they might finally get dropped

check with the registrar if they have it offered for sale or auction anywhere

Ok thanks.. I see the owner's info listed in whois, think i'll just call him tomorrow if this phone number works and see if he will just transfer it over, its not a preminum name or anything, just something I have an interest in.

Good move. If the owner is letting it expire anyway, you should be able to get it for near nothing (without the hassle of auctions, etc.).

well, maybe a good move... he will have to renew it before he can transfer it to you, and there is a good chance that he will suddenly see value in it when he finds out someone wants it (and he might not even know that it is expired either)

its a gamble either way, if you think it is such a low value domain that no one will want it, you could take your chance of getting it as the only bidder in auction, but if it is half decent it might go for some money

do a search at the registrar where it is registered and see if it is already offered for sale

Unless you get someone who knows how the system works, and then they can re-register it and fuck you over for another year.

Place a backorder with pool.com, snapnames and namejet.
If the domain is not a premium or anything you should get it at the base backorder price without going to auction.

If it is already showing the expired page it is likely the owner has no control over transferring or selling the domain at this point.

Check to see who is parking the domain if it is someone like godaddy and he let it expire GoDaddy has it's paws wrapped so tight around that domain you will be paying what they decide its worth....
