Can parents really screw a kid up by giving them a certain name?

So we all know that celebrities give their kids goofy names, insert your own reasoning here, but how about naming your kid Damien when he's born on 06/06/06?

True story: I knew a kid in high school whose father's name was Richard Head who preferred to be called Dick. That's right Dick Head. What's worse was the kid was actually named Richard Jr. or Dick Head Jr.!!! The front of house even had a sign with address # and last "The Heads" proudly painted on it. Needless to say this kid, Dick Head Jr. had it rough. Don't know what the fuck his parents were thinking!??

Dick Head, thats awesome. I dont think the name really affects anything though. Read the book "Freakonomics: A rogue economist explores the Hidden Side of Everything" (great read btw), it has an interesting chapter on names, name trends over the decades and classes, and the influence of names. Some dude named his first son Winner and his second son Loser. Winner ended up a low life scumbag in jail, and Loser ended up being a big success

Name absolutely influences your life path/aspects/behaviour/personality.
It's basically numerology that goes farther back than anything else.

There's large amount of scientific data that backs trends in names across all continents and ethnicity's.

I've never met a Blaine or Harold that I ever got along with. Dunno if its something in the name - just every one of them that I've met over the years were fuckups - in one way or another.

If you really wanna read about this theres an excellent book called Freakonomics that dicusses this VERY question.

The short version is that after research was done on this, its not the actual NAME per se that affects the persons life outcome or success its the socio-economic factors that go along with the name. For example, a parent is more likely to name their kid Shaniqua or DaShaun if they live in poor socio-economic conditions, i.e. the projects etc. THIS is the reason why they are generally less likely to succeed and not because of the name. Yes it is a fine line of a difference, but an actual difference.

I do highly recommend this book for anyone regardless as it approaches some very interesting issues and shows you the answers based on statistics and research that you would not likely think of.

Black Names - They did a thing on 20/20 where people with black names filled out 2 online applications for work that were exactly the same except the name. One under their real name (IE - Shawanda) and one under a fake name (IE - Jane). The people didn't get a SINGLE call back on their real 'black' names, but got tons of calls on their fake 'white' names. At least we can count on decades of great Maury shows.
