whatever you do, get one with an ATI graphics card.

I just copped one...really depends on what you need from it. My Compaq is somewhat low-end at $850.

I can recommend you the brands I trust: Toshiba (I have one) and Sony (my friends have some Vaios). Forget about Dell, Acer, HP and the like

Cheers for the advice folks. I'm going to be using the laptop to keep tabs on biz while i do a bit of travelling. Is the one I listed above fairly decent, you think?
