Is India a safe place for Americans to travel?

I know that we outsource a bunch of work to them but is it a safe place for an American to visit?

I'm thinking about outsourcing some aspects of my call center and would have to fly there to meet with the company that I have (thinking about) contracting to do my work.

Has anyone here ever travelled there or should I travel with body guards?

Good deal. I am supposed to fly out the first week of July. Any suggestions on places to stay and eat? I've eaten Indian food before and I'm not a huge fan of it. I'm sure there's a McDonalds on every corner so I'm sure I'll be fine.

I dont suppose it is any different for Americans than for Brits - so I would say its pretty safe.

The usual precautions should see you ok - remember its not a muslim country, so you shouldnt have all that shit.

should be ok. visited this Jan to see Taj Mahal except watch out for theives and cons. Don't try to exchange money outside of a bank. and oh! be careful with what you eat better yet, take an oral vaccine for diahorea before you got and take a big bottle of pepto bismol with you.

Half of India are muslims who do eat cows but not pigs.. so finding beef/chicken not gonna be too hard. Which part of India are you going to? There are not many McDonalds. A couple Pizza Huts but pizza sauce is local style and too spicy. Just try to eat at the hotel you stay in will be safer.

That's what I figured. We pump enough money into their economy and I'm sure we're [Americans] aren't a vein they want to severe.

I'm supposed to fly into Bangladesh and get escorted to West Bengal. They are sending a car to pick me up. Funny part is that I have not commited a dime to this company but it seems like they're going all out.

I see that you are probably going to Kolkatta for your outsourcing job.......but the HUB of OUtsourcing and the IT capital of india is down south ....called "Bangalore".......i live here

WTF? Bangladesh is a different country and you will require a VISA for Bangladesh as well as India. The roads from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Calcutta are pretty bad and it's a very long trip. Calcutta is also one of the dirtiest city in the world. They're going all out because prolly they'll hand you over to some kidnappers lol.. j/k.. but hey not impossible thou. Bangladesh is a muslim country and has made to the axis of evil list.

But like mpegmaster said outsourcing place is Bangalore not Calcutta.. what you doing talking to a west bengal company in one of the poorest/dirtiest/most corrupted city of the world?

Really man! I don't see 1 single reason why these people would want you to go via Bangladesh. Something smells.. you could go to Delhi or Mumbai then take domestic flight to Calcutta or could even find a direct flight to Calcutta since it has an International airport. Sorry but if I were you I'd be very careful about this company dude!
