    wtf is a torrent? what are they for? what do they do?

    I was checking a trade to make sure everything is all ok with the site & i clicked on a banner, & I got this page full of some wierd looking code & it has .torrent as an extension...

    What is this? It was a banner for a dvd? So, if this is some sort of code for a dvd, what do I do to see it?

                          It's not a river, for one.

                          Basically, a P2P type of storage/delivery system. Files are stored on numerous " servers " and delivered att the same time from those numerous servers ...

                          So some bytes from one, other from another and so on ...
                          I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !

                          But I can't figure out how he can breathe or type , at the same time ....

                                          Its something that not every site has, but some do. When they do, you can connect a lead pipe to your computer, press enter, then water comes out. They invented it to wash your pc when it gets too dirty. You can buy a filter from ebay to purify the water to your taste if you were to drink it, though its not recommended. Hope that helps.

                                                          I don't mean to be disrespective but I thought adult webmasters were at the cutting edge of the online industry. Torrenting has been around for an age and is in the mainstream crosshairs.

                                                          Wtf is a torrent? It's a file that directs a torrent download client to a community of PC's allowing access to files stored on those PC's within a shared folder
                                                          What are they for? They are used for downloading the newest movies, audio albums, adult content, books, software...
                                                          What do they do? Without the download client they will do nothing. With the client see above

                                                          The advantage of torrents over other p2p download networks (kazza, napster, etc) is that you can check the comments and feedback from others who have downloaded before you download. So you, 95% of the time, get the item you thought you would get and not some hacked piece junk.

                                                              They are used for downloading the newest movies, audio albums, adult content, books, software...
                                                              while that is one of the usages
                                                              it is also used to distribute GPL/GNU content/creative commons (linux , pod and vidcasts, demo games)
                                                              torrents are used because it cuts down on bandwidth costs , instead of one central server uploading the content to ppl who are downloading , you can spread the full package out over serveral home pc's that people have opened up , thereby cutting down on bandwidth costs
