They work because charcoal absorbs the toxins in alcohol that are created by the fermentation process.
I worked at a vet's office for a few years in high school.
Every time a dog or cat that had licked up anti-freeze or some other toxic chemical was brought in to the hospital, we'd pump some activated charcoal down into their stomachs.
The charcoal would bind to the toxins and then they'd puke it out or pass it in their stool.

I totally understand that you'd be skeptical. I thought it was bullshit too till I tested them out for myself. Most of the hangover pills are crap, but the charcoal ones do work.
You're right about the water & electrolytes but the pills make a huge difference.
I feel like I'm preaching about this stuff. Just get some of the Chaser or Sobr'K Hangover Stopper activated charcoal pills and try it out for yourself. I won't party without them.
