We stayed on the Mile on the end down towards Holyrood and Parliament (weird building in a beautiful setting). So, my exercise every morning was to walk up to the castle but I didn't go in because it was so crowded by the time it opened. Plus, the one time I was going to go in it was closed because there was a Girls Aloud concert being held there..lol. We are going to go back later in the year in the off-season and check it out.
I did discover that I actually like haggis...didn't try a deep fried mars bar though.

The Castle is good to see but to be totally honest its nothing exciting. Still something you should do when you're in Edinburgh tho... I think I know roughly where you were staying, nice spot to see the good parts of Edinburgh. Right next to the shopping centres and all the attractions.
I don't eat Haggis, and I too haven't tried a deep fried Mars Bar. It really doesn't appeal to me. Did you try Irn Bru? Everyone has to try our national drink (other than Whiskey) hehe
