Topic For Disscussion-Consolodation Of Our Industry As One Giant Group...

Well i am one voice that i am sure is mirrored by many that feel the very same way. I am sick of standing by and watching companies, Govt and all others taking shots at our business. The .XXX was the closest thing to almost really change our business forever. It was a good thing it got voted down. But the real problem as i see it is the "size" of our business and way we are all "fragmented" and "split apart" easy pickens and a great target to those who think they can just walk in and take charge.

I say that this industry as a whole needs to come up with " a plan" a way to form itself as "one" to unite and make it clear to the those from the Govt to all other outside and inside influence, to stay away. I have been told that "it could never be done" or "this webmasters and business as a whole would never do it" ...but what i say is this: Its never been done, unless we lay it out so all can see it, make it fair, and make it right, then at that time once its proposed to the community, at that time if it did not work, then it would be something to look back on at least and say " we did try it and did not work"

But i think if done right with the right people involved, our online business could be represented in the largest way possible and insure our business to grow and not get messed with at every turn. I see the Video business as having there Lobbiest that deals wtih there issues on a "high level" never to have to go thru every single strike or attempt to high jack thre business.

I put to the board this simple question:

    1. what methods do you see that would make the entire community come together as one, the most trusted, not self interest way of looking out for the business, but the fair and right way that business should be conducted and having one voice as an industry as a whole?

Someone from a program that shall remain nameless took AaronM and I to dinner a few years ago and spent most of the time talking about a consolidation of the industry. Only thing is, it wasn't exactly not with "self interest" in mind.

hmmm, that almost sounds like a double negative . . . so to clarify, the plan was totally self interest generated.

" Urban reformers in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries had long pointed with horror to the unsanitary and inadequate conditions in which millions of Americans lived, particularly in large cities. But it took the severe economic crisis of the Great Depression to force the federal government to intervene directly in the housing market, and even then the response was often only half-hearted. In the 1930s, access to public housing was highly desirable, and early residents preferred their new homes, which offered bright and well-appointed alternatives to their previous substandard residences. The sharpest criticisms of public housing, however, came from builders and realtors who feared competition and argued that public housing was too appealing and would decrease home ownership. The most influential of the anti-public housing lobbies was the National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB). In this 1935 report to the board, NAREB president Walter S. Schmidt argued against public housing on economic and ideological grounds... more

This is what I was mentioning when on the State Of The Industry Panel in Phoenix this last forum. Webmasters and many of us company owners seem to not want to be involced until the shit starts hitting the fan. This is not a proactive approach.

this raises legal issues for the whole industry if the whole industry is banded together in an improper way. at first it seems great and then the group makes an inside deal amongst itself and then it is a shitstorm. gia all over again...

Therein lies the problem. Too many people never grasp the big picture, and are only looking at the short term benefits to them. If others benefit, it is purely by accident.

goes against the whole idea of what is right and what is fair.
Unfortunately, what is right and what is fair rarely fit into the equation.

I think it can, and needs to be done too Mike.

There's a handful of us, that IF we united we'd have a good shot at pulling everyone else in the industry on board.

The trick I think is to make it worth while for people in the industry to be part of that amalgamation.

This is the only thread on GFY where everyone is in agreement --

I am willing to throw my hat in to the ring! I will start non profit organization to raise individual sexual awareness, increase sexual education fund treatment of sexually transmitted diseases on a global scale if enough people show interest. Now this is an idea that everyone can get behind. Because there is no one out there saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with what we do as an industry and sex is OK as long as we are not hurting anyone. Then going further to say here is how to do it right and we will help you if you if you are in need of it!

I will tell you in many ways the Video Industy laughs at us for this very reason.

One major video company owner who is a close personal friend of mine, he was telling me that there Lobbiest deals with "the shit" he was an ex govt lobbiest, he then suggested that "the Online industry should get it's shit together....."

I dont claim to be anyone that can do that kind of work, but there are "top guns" out there that are politicaly plugged in and have the brain not to lead us down the wrong path.

All i am saying is, "divided we fall that much faster" "together we stand a chance to kick some serious ass"

Talking among an industry and a positive exchange of ideas is the ONLY way something like this will ever come about.

webdouglas, i am with ya. i am a member of my daughters PTA, and i have a life, i also have cars houses and other things i pay from the income from my "adult business" on the internet (Smashbucks). I want to protect that right to do so with out any outside problems. I think that a way to protect and keep most people not in the "spot light" is the key to forming this the "right way"

There will be a way to still protect those idenities with keeping them protected, when i send my taxes in to uncle sam i dont put in "bold red letters" I am in the porn biz...lol

This is good stuff to talk about, keep the discussion going....

                                                    My Motivation for this:

I hate being fucked with , through the years, orgainized groups from the Mafia and the Govt does not get fucked with.

                                                    Indiviuals get eaten alive

I have learned that hard lesson in business in the past...People listen to a "voting concern" not a single person, carries ZERO weight.

Perfect chance to send a message to those like .XXX and all others trying to take charge of our industry to FUCK OFF.

Okay, I know I'm opening up a can of worms here... but if we want to unite under one banner, why not put together what's important to us in definite terms and take it to the FSC? I can make you guys this promise right now... since I'm on the FSC Board, if some of you want to get together with me either online or in person or whatever and talk about what's important to the Internet industry, what we want to see done, etc... I will promise to take all the things that we come up with straight to the next FSC Board meeting and represent those interests and see what can be done. Although I can't speak for the FSC here on GFY, since I'm only 1 Board member out of many, I can speak for myself. There are other people with an Internet background on the Board of Directors too, and from personal experience I can say that the ENTIRE Board has been VERY receptive to Internet issues when they are raised. With ANY organization, the more support it gets the more it can accomplish. So if you're game for putting together one or many brainstorming sessions, then let's do it. Hell, I'm even willing to meet in San Diego next week if you're going to Cybernet Expo...

That said... there's an issue that Mike raised that I'd REALLY like to get some opinions on... and that's this: Do you guys think that we ought to be more aggressive about protecting this industry PROACTIVELY (rather than defensively) even if it means we lose more often than we are losing now? For example, let's say there was an opportunity to challenge obscenity laws, but only a 10% chance that the challenge would work.. is it worth taking the risk and spending the time and money for the sake of that 10% possibility, or is it better to just stay in a defensive posture and fight when we HAVE to and when the odds are more clearly on our side for success? I'm of the opinion that too much bullshit happens to this industry, and I want to get out there are start being more aggressive even if we get shot down on some of those attempts to be more aggressive. Bu maybe I'm all alone on this one... maybe the rest of you feel that we need to wait for the best opportunities before we act. Where do you stand?

It should definately be tried, but - i`m amazed that more big names haven`t commented in this thread yet.

Only shortfall I can see is - The *vast* majority of webmasters are not concerned for this industry. They look at it as a get in, make some cash, get out sort of opportunity.

The minority - program owners, and people with huge traffic, are concerned for the long term. So the next step I think would be making a webpage with an open letter, and passing it around to the people that matter (and care) most.

I hate being fucked with , through the years, orgainized groups from the Mafia and the Govt does not get fucked with.

                                                                    Indiviuals get eaten alive

I have learned that hard lesson in business in the past...People listen to a "voting concern" not a single person, carries ZERO weight.

Perfect chance to send a message to those like .XXX and all others trying to take charge of our industry to FUCK OFF.
some problems you will have to overcome...

                                                                    1) this is a business that consists mostly of nobodies that make no money and have no real interest in fighting for anything. they are mostly individualists who can't stand authority or playing as a team... thats why they are trapped in their mom's basement building galleries
                                                                    2) why should i fight, if i can let you fight? look at acacia as an example. 11 companies out of how many took a stance? we sent a 1000.00 just because we felt guilty. how many sent nothing? the reality is simple... if one company spent 10,000,000 fighting the patent and wins...everyone wins.
                                                                    3) this business consists of a lot of people doing very questionable shit. it would have to be a pretty exclusive club with some high standards... but uhm... i think we would all be surprised if we started airing the dirty laundry of even the cleanest companies. i have been around since early 98 and i know something about almost every real player in this biz that they would never want anyone to know.
                                                                    4) organization in any real sense means you put the spotlight on yourself. it means attention. it means more attention. it means more media attention. it means more media attention calling everyone child pornographers. it means more media attention to every scammer doing something shady who will be connected to each and every one of us. why do i need to be a part of that when i can simply find safety in numbers and be anonymous?

i think that at best you could possibly create a lobbying group and solicit contributions, but you would need a pretty ingenius plan to put pressure on the average turd around here to participate and donate... otherwise it would be GIA all over again as Evan pointed out... a few junkies and playboys trying to change the world... that was about as successful as a fart in church.

I got in this industry because I love it period. I love everything about it even the bullsh!t. I will stay in it broke and until I die or the government keeps me from doing it anymore. I don't care if you are making millions and I am making nothing we are in this together, That is the problem.

I have been a GFY-r for 4 months and I can?t believe the attitude of some of even the vets. POWER COMES IN NUMBERS if this industry got it together it would be a very powerful monster.

I took 50% of my earnings and donated it to the local Aids foundation. If every one of us did something like that and where able to actually say where the money came from. The worlds support for this industry would grow slowly

I have made a few hundred dollars since day 1 sold my car and almost lost my house. I took 50% of my earnings and donated it to the local Aids foundation. If every one of us did something like that and where able to actually say where the money came from. The worlds support for this industry would grow slowly

Sponsors with rewards, could make it possible to donate your reward amounts to the cause. If .XXX becomes a reality, get them to donate a portion for each name, etc..

But it will be another 5-10 years before such an association is a workable idea. Even then, such things are usually driven from the top down, ie when some sufficiently influential industry leaders perceive that standards and organisation will benefit them.

It has very different priorities from other branches of adult entertainment and it will be hard enough attempting to find common ground between people in this business, without trying to accomodate other interests too.

Ron and RB weren't found to be doing anything wrong and they were made an example of by the FTC. i can only imagine what would happen if the biggest companies all got together and said "we are going to fight"

"3) this business consists of a lot of people doing very questionable shit. it would have to be a pretty exclusive club with some high standards... but uhm... i think we would all be surprised if we started airing the dirty laundry of even the cleanest companies. i have been around since early 98 and i know something about almost every real player in this biz that they would never want anyone to know."

Times are a changin, i have heard the stories, and this only makes the point even clearer, from the old days of abuse with the Visa and processors, you cant hit your customers over the head anymore. The business is growing and that argument is good but growth has to happen with the growth of our business. As that great commercial says " they can make you rich they can make you poor" the customer. Some kind of standard has to go into effect similar to what Visa makes us go thru to put up a site. Its the only way, i am for not being told what to do ever, but if it hurts the future, and its short sided, then i need to be "clipped"

"4) organization in any real sense means you put the spotlight on yourself. it means attention. it means more attention. it means more media attention. it means more media attention calling everyone child pornographers. it means more media attention to every scammer doing something shady who will be connected to each and every one of us. why do i need to be a part of that when i can simply find safety in numbers and be anonymous?"

Exaclty, still the Wild West this internet thing, i would rather be part of a "movement" and for once put the world in front of our business "professional" what we do is not that easy, at least the ones that are successful and are mindful of there business.

So with all that you say....it still does not move me to think if a plan was put into effect that something could not be done. I think maybe with the latest scares and the way the US govt is treating our business, the timing couldnt be better than its ever been. Even the simple moron can hopeful see the writing on the wall and the future if it keeps moving this way, or they can be ready to go get there job at Mc Donalds.

"think that at best you could possibly create a lobbying group and solicit contributions, but you would need a pretty ingenius plan to put pressure on the average turd around here to participate and donate... otherwise it would be GIA all over again as Evan pointed out... a few junkies and playboys trying to change the world... that was about as successful as a fart in church."

You are so right about this above, it would have to be "groups" and i think i heard one of the best plans the other day, it was from Brandon from Fight the Patent, i put this up on GFY to start the talking and the thinking....later next week, there will be a press release with a simple plan, i think its a great step in the right direction, it includes everyone, and puts us on the right path.....hopefuly.

Its funny to watch the "political process" unfold, and to see everyones ideas and thougths on this matter, but as i said before, no great idea is ready with out a great plan. At that time we will see from the "turds to the major movers and shakers" if this will hatch.
