Hey everyone!
I am like that, but rather by choice. I enjoy working for myself, and not having to meet up with random ppl all the time. I work very well with other ppl and like socializing, but prefer much more to be on my own. I suffered from social phobia as a kid until my early twenties. Social phobia really isnt very hard to cure, but can easily evolve to "satellite illnesses" if not treated correctly - such as "panic disorder", "depression" and "obsessive compulsory disorder". The earlier, panic disorder, happened to me, and even if my social phobia is almost totally gone, this is what I am struggling with today.
I have studied these "disorders" quite a bit, and have even been participating (in the development and also a bit for treating myself) in _online_ therapeutic treatments programs for these kind of problems. If anyone would like some advice regarding medication, cognitive treatment etc, please feel free to mail me your icq uin on cchups (at) gmail.com For any haters, I do know a lot about this, and also have 3 doctors I work with for harder questions.
And Mal, your problem isnt very severe or unique - you may def. be treated quite easily with the help of therapy and perhaps meds. You are very welcome to mail me if you wish.Comment

I've always been shy, its been getting better though.. my main problem is I really really really suck at leading conversations.. I don't mind listening to people vent, I pay attention and I'll give my input on things they've said.
But when it comes to saying whats on my mind, my head goes empty before I can even open my mouth.
I'll think out loud to some people, but thinking out loud doesnt really give the other party much room for conversation, and the problems I'm trying to fix usually come together in my head just from talking about it rather than from who I'm talking too.. in fact, usually when I'm thinking out loud noone knows what I'm talking about.
It's so hard to get people to understand why its so hard to talk too, they think theres some switch in our heads we can just flip and suddenly words will spill out, it doesnt work like that.. you can't help being shy, it's not because your not comfortable around certain people either, you just simply cant think of anything to say.. its like someone talking to you about a subject you know nothing about, you can listen but you dont know what to say about it.. except its with everything, you cant think of any specific topic or hold a specific thought subject long enough to have any kind of conversation with it before your mind switches channels and is on to something else.
Well, thats how I am at least...HAH! FOUND IT FRISComment

I'm generally very sociable and love spending time with people and having fun. I'm usually one of the loudest in the crowd. Having said that I sure do get times when I just don't really wanna see or talk to anyone. But as a rule I'm pretty sociable.
My advice is to just make yourself get out there, even if you don't feel like it, and you're bound to have some fun. The more you do it the more you will want to do it.Comment

Well, thats how I am at least...
I'm quite much the same - I've wondered whether it's just a "different wiring" or possibly even a disorder, but I've come to accept functioning like that (often needing others to start up conversation etc.).
If I'd try to be more social in the sense of being a "topic-starter", the topic would only be something that REALLY interests ME personally a lot...
I find it kinda difficult starting a conversation on anything "right out of the blue".
Apart from that, I'm also somewhat anti-social.. but by choice more or less
Since I can feel a pressure to be social in social gatherings/events, I simply prefer sticking with old friends and new friends introduced within the group so to speak.
I know I would "drain" myself if I ever decided to try being "ultra-social", it's just not me and I don't see any benefit in it;
¤ New pals to the left & right, all the time, would just confuse my own existence.
¤ I feel people in general (say.. 75% of a general population) just aren't on the same level as me in terms of moral, etiquette, intelligence, interests etc. etc. - People can be outright assholes & morons too often.
I get by perfectly fine with a few "well-matched" close friends than shitloads of peeps less close to me.
But for the thread-starter...
mal, I hope You find & take a suitable route for Your problem.
I *think* You should start "practicing" step-by-step, with "small" steps to begin with..
Best of luck to You!

babagirls - I can relate to your story 100%. At school my science teacher had it in for me big time. He would constantly humiliate me in class and make me look like a complete idiot. To this day I have no idea why he did it and I would love to ask him why - maybe a phonecall is in order today.Originally posted by Babagirlsi've been anti social since i was kid, and it only gets worse with age. started when i was in like Kindegarten and my teacher asked us all a question and i raised my hand and my answer was wrong and she MOCKED me in front of the class to the point of humialiation. ever since then, i've been "shy" (aka anti-social) all my life....afraid i'll say something wrong and be laughed at...then came high school, i was still *HIGHLY* anti social but then fell into doing Speed (snorting) and so the popular chicks would snort up with me in the bathroom...that helped actually (the whole acceptance by "cool people" thing).
anyways, now as a sober adult working from home, I'm even that much more anti-social. Unfortuantly, the only "cure" for me in situations where i get anxiety attacks/fear of being social is to take a few shots or drink about 4 beers to calm down. I need to seek some counsling or something. Just dont know where to start.
Aside from that - i'm not the most social person but I have a good group of friends I socialise with.
I'm no doctor but I think people need to learn to enjoy their own company more. You need to be comfortable with yourself before you can be comfortable with someone else

I go through cycles - sometimes I quite enjoy going out and meeting people, and other times I'm fed up with the stupidity and ignorance of people in general and withdraw in to my own little world.
I've moved from place to place all my life, and was forever the 'new kid on the block' - and found that being extroverted was the only way to adapt and cope with it.
Through the 80s and 90s I was a bar circuit junkie in Toronto - out every night and weekend. Hung with a high-energy group of nightclub friends. But by the end of the 90s I was feeling physically exhausted and growing tired of the club scene.
These days I find it very tiring (both mentally and physically) to be outgoing all the time - so often I tend to 'go hermit' for a while and spend time concentrating on personal projects and such.Comment

I don't think it's a disease. For those of you who think "you just need to cheer up", it doesn't work that way. Some cases of depression are influenced by reduced quantities or activity of serotonin in the brain. Certain medications, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI), work to balance serotonin levels in the brain. For some people, SSRIs may be helpful. However, the causes and solutions might be more involved than unbalanced serotonin levels alone. A medical professional can help determine the best course of action. If you have depression, make an appointment to talk with a therapist.Originally posted by punkworldI have absolutely no idea why I feel like that. Or, actually, I do. There is no rational "why" though, it's a disease.
And yes, my friends do think I'm crazy. I've found out that drinking makes it less, though, so I drink. A lot. So my friends think I'm a little less crazy than I am, and more of a drunk than I am.
I've been suffering from depression for a while and always knew something wasn't right but never took the steps to do anything. I finally did yesterday and explained to my doctor what I was feeling and he prescribed Paxil. 20 mg to start, and I go back in 10 days to see how its working for me. I took it this morning at 5 a.m and went back to bed til 7 a.m. I woke up feeling tired but I had a good sleep. I couldn't stop yawning and the best way I can describe the feeling of it is fuzzy. I feel fuzzy. I can tell something is different because I am calmer, and just take things as they come I guess you could say. I'm normally as fast walker but when I went out today I was relaxed. Life seemed easier.
I know the side effects and obviously haven't experienced anything yet. But whats worse? Living the way you are or getting the side effects? Which include : dizziness, sensory disturbances (including electric shock sensations and tinnitus), abnormal dreams, agitation, anxiety, nausea, sweating, mood fluctuations, headache, fatigue, nervousness and sleep disturbances.
Either way you need to talk to a doctor about what you're experiencing and they will help you out.

Sounds like placebo. You may start to feel even more bad in a couple of days.
But just hang in there, 2 weeks isn't that long.

I know it takes 10-15 days to start to kick in and 4-6 weeks for it to fully kick in. But I was different today. If you knew me you would have seen it. My husband drove by me and my daughter at lunch time and he said I didn't look so stressed.
It's not all in my head. Something that normally would have bothered the crap out of me didn't. It did to a point but I didn't dwell on it, like I normally would.
And when it normally bothers me I can't think of anything else but the problem and it eats away at me. This time it didn't.
Maybe it can work faster for certain ppl? Everyone has different side effects so maybe...?pinkysteph AT gmail DOT com

Working from home was the biggest most crucial fuck up to my brain ever .
After 5 years of barely leaving the house I have to say I was afraid of people.
It was Starting to affect every aspect of my life cause I was even too nervous to deal with every day people like gas station workers etc,
I wouldn't say I was depressed or anything , however I do think that if you are in your comfort zone for too long you aren't doing yourself any favours.
I used to be a chef and do these big ass buffets and stuff for very important people around ottawa , and never had a problem dealing with people at all , in fact I like to think I was very outgoing and thought of myself as a " people person " I used to be able to talk the talk etc and after 5 years at home I would be freaked out about social situations & family gatherings even cause I would be too nervous to even hold an intelligible conversation ( still workin on that one
)
GTS was tryin to hire me for 2 years before I got up the courage to actually go meet them in person. It was kinda funny because I had drove 6 hours to meet them and when I finally got there I pretty much had a full blown panic attack cause we found the place too easy and I didn't have time to grip my bearings , was shaking when I walked in.
I've been working the 9-5 for around 4 months now and I feel 100% different than a few months ago , I was actually talking about this with coworkers today and I described the feeling as " sub human "
I'm still pretty nervous in some situations but overall I'm starting to feel like the " old Kelly " again.
I don't like to post personal shit on this board , but I know how I was feeling a few months back and thought someone might be in a similar situation and decide to make some changes knowing that it can get better.Comment

here is the answer to all of you anti socialers problems...
hit the gym and work out and get your self in top physical condition.
fuck trying to talk/interact/communicate w/ people in your current state...
people are generally attracted to good looking physically fit people... people will gravitate towards you and you will be the social butterfly you have always wanted to be without doing a thing. people will want to be around you and people will like you.
stop dwelling in your current state of unhappiness and channel your time into improvement and enhancement... this goes for financially as well as physically.
use the internet to make your money, not to consume your life and you will enjoy life 10x more.
for what its worth, pay for a personal trainer who will be there for you 24 hours a day.
just like business.. be humble, dedicate some hard work in the beginning and you will reap the benefits later on.Looking to speak w/ high volume nutra CPA affiliates or networks... msg me

I dont think Im anti-social but Ive realised that Im terrible at making new friends. I have no problem getting along with people but its always in a set place. Like, I'll get to know some dude at the gym or whatever but I never seem to be good at taking the friendship to the next level like hanging out at my place or whatever.
I already have friends from childhood, but with everyone moving all over the fucking place I wouldnt mind meeting up some new peeps to hang out with more.Comment

Please take the time to read the entries made by Paxal users on this blog. After going thru the depression nightmare with my teenaged daughter (they put her on Prozac), I have learned a lot about the medical community and their lack of a complete understanding of SSRI interactions with your brain. They rely on theory and past studies, but they don't have definitive answers.Originally posted by pink_in_the_middleI don't think it's a disease. not talking to anyone isn't healthy if you can't mentally think it through yourself. if you can well then you don't need a support group. most people can't fathom the idea that some people can actually get along just fine without having to out every personal dispute you have with yourself or someone else.
