Easton, it's not ideal to work out on an empty stomach, unless you are just trying to lose some stubborn fat and then even then I would only do that intermittantly. If you are lifting weights heavy or doing mixed exercises of different types you should fuel up first with a solid food breakfast and then do as you already do and drink the protein shake plus some carbs with it immediately after your workout. And please don't say you aren't hungry when you wake up like so many people say, because my answer to that is that a- you aren't working out hard enough and b- if you aren't hungry when you wake up that is a symptom of sub-optimal metabolic function, and c-that you would get used to it if you force yourself to eat first thing and it will soon feel good and give you more energy but you will make more progress in the gym as well.
