    American's driving a lot less!

From November to May American's drove 40.5 billion fewer miles. If you say the average car gets 25 MPG (probably generous) that is 1.62 billion gallons of gas not used. If the average price of gas during that time was $3.60/gallon that is $5.83 billion not spent on gas.

Well its good for the ecology and probably wont harm the economy too much as i'll bet most people are cutting down on non-essential driving.

Actually, as painful as high fuel prices are, it is good that we have fuel tax here in the UK because it does give our government a significant amount of leverage where concerns controlling the price of petrol.

On a litre (costing us £1.20 or approx $2.40) about 70 pence (approx $1.40) is made up of fuel tax and VAT (value added tax). Of the remainder, only a small proportion is the fuel itself.

it's probably one of the reasons gas prices have dropped.

yep lots of people driving less

(AGI) - Houston, 28th July ? There was a record fall in the number of car journeys undertaken in the USA in May. According to the latest data issued by the Federal Highway Administration, US citizens travelled 9.6 billion fewer miles than in the previous year, notching a drop of 3.7 pct. Never before have so many cars been left in the garages in the month of May, normally characterised by outings for the long Memorial Day weekend. This is the third-biggest monthly fall in the past 66 years, with the downward trend now set in for a seven-month run. 40.5 billion fewer miles were eaten up by cars between November 2007 and May 2008. "They are driving less and using more fuel-efficient cars, US citizens are showing that tomorrow?s highways won?t be paid for by the federal fuel taxes", remarked US Transport Secretary, Mary Peters, in a note. In the first five months of 2008, 29.8 billion fewer miles were driver than in the same period a year before. "Fewer trips also mean less money for the Highways", added the Federal Highway administrator, Jim Ray, "the status quo won?t hold into the twenty-first century".

It is also cheaper to fly most places these days, so for the people who would drive on trips/vacations probably aren't anymore

I'm trying to think of a single instance where I've changed my driving plans/habits because of gas prices, and I can't. Unless I run completely out of money, I can't imagine not driving somewhere because gas is 2 or 3 more dollars a gallon.

                              Same here.

It hasn't changed my driving habits, or jet ski riding.
