Hughes proved that modern MMA has surprassed Royce Gracie. Huge props to Royce, without him, we would not have MMA this day.
At the end of the day, it was BJJ strategy that was used to win.
Matt Hughes himself has said that MFS used belt rankings, he would be a BJJ Blackbelt.

Just want you all to know that we(MFS) respect the Gracie family for all they have done for this sport. I have seen alot of trash talk by forum members, saying that we were disrespectful before, during, and after the fight.
The camera's do not show us shaking hands with the gracie's and letting them know how much we respect their family.
They also do not show me introducing myself to Helio Gracie at the weigh-ins and letting him know how much we owe him for bringing the sport here to the U.S.
We are fully aware of the following the Gracie's have created for themselves, but booing a U.S. born farm boy when he is announced before he fights a guy who is still wearing a brazilian flag when he wins. That is showing no respect for "YOUR" American boy!!!
