fuck drugs! some people need them but the social approval for people taking scripts has become to much. everyone is on something and it makes me sad. i was recently diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and was perscribed ativan but i refuse to take the shit. i thought i was sick with something but apparently i just started getting anxiety attacks one day for no reason. anyways, im just gonna fight it out myself and hopefully it will go away. spending time alone on the computer definately does not help. it only creates a barrier you can safely hide behind. this past weekend i went camping with some friends, forgot all about work and i didn't feel anxious once.

I've been taking Xanex for a good 6-8 years now. I do not take it daily, only when I need it. For bedtime, or when I am panicky, etc.

1st off. You do not need to take it daily. Contrary to popular belief, and the wills of the drug companies. You can take it AS NEEDED. This is confirmed not only by my use, but by the recommendations of doctors I've been to.

2nd. If you are smoking, chewing, drinking cola. Cut back.

I used to get panic attacks ALL THE TIME. Restraunts, strange places, social events, bars, couldn't sleep, and so on. I changed my diet, stopped chewing Kodiak (a half a tin a day habit for years), and cut back on caffine and TADA. Little need for Xanex to sleep anymore, and panic attacks few and far between. Maybe one every 6-9 months, or on flights, etc.

When I have them, they are a lot less severe, and I can generally catch them before they are full on madness. I take a Xanex and w/i and hour I am fine again.

Don't believe the hype.

A lot of the reasons behind panic attacks are something you can control. You do not need Xanex, or Prozac to cope on a daily basis.

I've had big bottles of 2mg xanax sitting around the house for years. My doctor originally prescribed them to me because back then I was having very severe seizures and he said that any kind of stress could be a trigger. He told me to take between a 1/2 and a whole pill anytime I felt stressed out.

If you know me, you know that I very rarely feel stressed. But everytime I went back to the pharmacy, I got the refill anyway. Hell...$10 and I get another 45 pills?

So one hand, my man...I'd love to help ya. On the other, no way, no how I'm committing any kind of crime like that.

Go exercise, get laid and/or get a professional massage. Valerian root's a good idea too, but you're right about it tasting like shit.

a good friend of mine has panic attacks and takes valium everyday. a doctor should have no problem prescribing it to you. i would see another doctor.

I take it for panic attacks and on occasion, when I don't sleep well. I've never been addicted. I can go 4 months without a panic attack or needing it. Sometimes I'll have 4-5 panic attacks in a week, sometimes 2 a day. Stress affects my health severely so I try to keep the stress levels as low as possible.

I had no clue what strength I was taking --- 0.25mg --- perhaps this is why it's not addicting to me.

i don't think its a solution but relying on meds as a crutch is no solution either.

i did not say anyone should rely solely on pills for anything. i will say that you can't diagnos yourself and prescribe yourself a treatment if you are not a doctor and you shouldn't categorically rule out medications that can in fact help if you are not fully qualified to do so.

whether anyone likes it or not, medication has a role in correcting physiological problems and improving health... the degree of which is certainly debateable. however, for the most part, modifying your body chemistry is modifying your body chemistry... whether you do it by eating oranges or by eating a vitamin c supplement. (hippies feel free to chime in about giving ritalin to kids -even though i am obviously not talking about extreme cases of what many might consider abuse)

its also worth pointing out in these discussions about drugs that the primary reason the medical establishment prescribes a pill for everything is not because there is some big conspiracy of drug companies to make piles of money... its because when a doctor tells a patient to eat right and exercise, they just won't do it in almost all cases.

Xanax can be highly addictive unless you have a lot of control and will power. A few years ago I was really stressed out with major anxiety and ordered a bunch from the internet, thinking I would only take it when I needed it. Within a few weeks I was taking up to 10 blue pills a day (I think the 1mg ones). I became increasingly paranoid, and I would forget entire events from the day before. Then I had to stop cold turkey and went through absolute hell. I couldn't sleep for more than a few hours, couldn't eat, had body and stomach aches all the time, and basically felt like I was dying and going insane. This lasted about a week. Also I don't remember when it happened but one night I was feeling okay, listening to a CD, and then I just broke down and started crying and nearly killed myself. The scary thing is that I didn't even realize the withdrawal was because of the xanax because I was only taking it a few weeks, and I had been on a similar valium binge long ago and that never happened, and I didn't realize xanax was physically addictive. So I really thought I was dying and losing my mind for no reason. It's a good thing you can't order it on the internet anymore (or at least not as easily as before). Although I do tend to go out of control with drugs (but have never been hooked on "hard" drugs before), I can see how even a casual user can become addicted over time if taken daily or more than once a day. So, if you're the type of person who is known to smoke weed everyday or go through periods of heavy drinking, don't do it! I can see how it can help people with major anxiety attacks who do not need it everyday, but if you end up taking it everyday you will get fucked, and it sounds like you'd probably end up taking it everyday. I would recommend spending less time on the computer. Do your work early in the day and be done with it, go outside, do something physically active on a regular basis, and spend time with friends so you don't get trapped inside your mind.

you're not lying man. i had about 20 of them that i was supposed to use only during times that i was super stressed. i ended up eating them all in about 7 days time. the comedown was so brutal. i couldn't sleep, really fucked with my emotions. not a fun drug to stop.
