I had an affiliate do this without asking permission.
On the first day he signs up, hotlinks all our 2min previews (about half an hour total) into what he probably thought was the uberest gallery ever, and then slammed it with junk traffic that I can only assume was feeder hits from some broker. Burned more of my bandwidth that day than all our members and every other affiliate combined. He did make a few sales, but for us he was a net loss of several hundred dollars. I had to disable hotlinking on the previews then.
But, since you actually know what you're doing, I'd be willing to duplicate them to a separate directory for your use only.

It's getting to be like this: Affiliates are needing to do some hotlinking to compete for traffic with these mega tubes and if sponsors can't help them do that then they are not going to be sending any real traffic.
In the real advertising world (out side of porn) companies would be begging for us to hotlink their videos with their branding on it. It's free advertising.
So I think there is going to be some new affiliate models comming in the future and hotlinking is going to be part of the model.
I can tell you right now, and nothing against the way anyone here does business, if
I can't hotlink then I'm simply not using the sponsor. I can't compete without it.
There are several sponsors that I really did good with that I can't really use now and
that sucks, but that's how it's going.
Youtube has people hotlinking their videos by the millions and it will be only a matter of time before some sponsor rises to that level. The sponsor that does that first will surely dominate.

Generally agree, but anything can be abused, and I'm not running a charity. I won't let someone take $600/day out of my pocket so they can put $200 into theirs. That's not a sane way to run any business. You can't accommodate everyone all the time. But anyone with a sensible strategy is welcome. I know from his sales history with us that biskoppen is a pro who won't do anything stupid.

I failed to mention that in the real advertising world the companies would have one
video that was 30 secs long and not 84 2min clips hijacked from the tour.
That does make a differrence.
But the youporn/youtube thing still stands. They are being hot linked like it's stupid and showing some clips that are 20-50 megabytes in size.
I'd say the ability to grant that kind of bandwidth to affiliates is going to be powerful
thing in the future. And by future I mean in the next comming months.
I don't think we will get thru 2009 without some sponsor providing some kind of easy plug-in massive hotlinking system.
I can tell you of at least one sponsor I know that can afford it with no problem.
Maybe I can code up some kind of system and sell it to them.

if the surfer wants more video send them to the sponsor's tour page to watch it there
although many think hotlinked embedded video can be great to plaster over a bunch of splogs and stick a bunch of dating ads around it

I agree on this. I don't like any freehosting. Its a partnership The affiliate is getting 50% and I have to host his files? If his traffic is doing well enough then he should be able to afford his own bandwidth. I am glad to give copies of trailers to anyone that wants them to upload to their own servers. I may on a case to case basis help someone out by setting up a special trailer that is allowed only access from certain domains though.Comment
