When does it crash? Is it a crash or a reboot? Make sure you dont have updates turned to auto update, or the computer will reboot.

i dont care if it reboots what it does is lock up perpetually doing god knows what you have to hard power down to get it back up

is it a surprise here that a windows product isnt stable in a 24/7 environment? has there ever been one that is?

has windows ever released an OS that you would run your money generating sites on?

The sheep will ignore posts like this. But if someone who read somewhere from someone who read somewhere that someones brother said that Vista needs 4 gigs to run then they sure will remember that and mention it everywhere they can.

Vista is very stable. I can leave my computer on for weeks without it crashing. You must be doing something very wrong. Dont blame Vista for it man, blame yourself or your computer.

Got in on my new laptop, too, I really tried to give it a try, but I re-installed it with XP Pro after 10 minutes. Its slow compared to XP. And I have 3Gb RAM.

wow, all these "new facts" are 5 different links about the same topic. That XP sp3 is faster. Very possible. I never tried sp3 but if they tested it then i sure believe that.

But now explain how Vista is a piece of shit as you said a few posts above.

Funny how its clear in this thread and for example the comments in the last link you posted that everyone who actually runs Vista loves it and 90% of the bashers only have read about it. Its cool to bash Vista right? Youre one of the cool guys if you do that.

I use vista on my laptop and desktop and have used Linux on them before as well as XP. Linux is the only thing I would run on servers, however for home and business use I recommend the Windows platform.

I've used Vista successfully, running practically anything I want on it, without any problems or issues related with incompatibility between XP and Vista. I do have a powerful PC and a laptop that is fairly fast.

If your computer is powerful, either Vista or XP SP2, SP3 is alright. I like Vista better because of the improved visual elements. Otherwise it is practically the same as XP.

When i ran xp i was constantly busy with cleaning up the puter, removing shit, crashes etc etc. Since i have Vista its been as smooth as possible. It never crashes, i rarely have to reboot...i basically have no problems whatsoever. This is the first time in all my years working with Windows.

Im a UNIX admin, I taught college classes on UNIX Internals and I can tell you windows still hasnt gotten memory sharing right. Instead of trying to maintain backwards compatibility microsoft needed to do a complete overhaul from the ground up, a protected kernel ala UNIX would be a good fucking start. Its a turd man..no matter how much spin you put on it trying to call it miracle grow its still just bullshit

I agree. My laptop and desktop are both on 24/7 My encoding boxes are also on vista running 24/7 and running encodes every night under full 100% that whole time. I NEVER have crashes. I built all my boxes, and of course didnt build the laptop. NO problems on anything. Everything I ran on XP I run on Vista. Can't be an OS problem sounds like hardware issues to me if you have problems.

Your article? Are you IT expert? No? So why someone should listen to it? I was working as system programmer during 5 years (was writing low-level code for MS-DOS and Win32 OS's), but I don't post my own toughs here. Not because I had no experience with Vista (I had), but because I know that the ppl here won't be interested to read it. That's why I posted a link to Peter Gutmann's article. He is a know computer scientist and it will be stupid to ignore his comments. Even if you don't agree with his point

As about the 5 year old equipment. Personally I don't have a super-computer for work. I have a rather average PC: Core2Duo E6550/2Gb/GeForce 9600GT. However don't want to give away a half of my system resources to some OS just to let it launch itself. I want these resources for the applications I run. Vista has ZERO features that I can't found in XP.

                                                                1. Techs who are too lazy to read the HCL and/or SCL that Microsoft has freely available on its site or...

                                                                2. People who fed into the hype propagated by those in #1

Fact of the matter is that Vista is the most stable and secure end user version of Windows to date.
The only difference is that you have to ensure that the hardware that you're using has proper drivers that were written to meet the higher standards that Microsoft implemented (and that any software you use also rises to the occasion).

Techs over the years have gotten lazy and many just loaded Vista onto their boxes without doing their research. Then when they ran into issues because vendors didn't want to invest more time in programming proper Vista drivers, these "techs" screamed bloody murder that Vista was a "piece of crap".

Microsoft can take some of the blame for the overall perception of Vista as well because they should have revealed exactly what they were really doing when they released it...they designed Vista to be a more secure and equivalently stable competitor to Apple's proprietary masterpiece, MAC OS X.

What happened next was a marketing nightmare though, because the companies like Dell, who pushed $399 boxes that couldn't handle Vista's requirements suddenly started trying to force MS' hand in terms of licensing fees (so that they could upgrade their hardware but keep their overall prices low). MS held strong, but Dell did a power play and told consumers that they could "downgrade" to XP, which was basically an open snub of Vista. From there everyone jumped onto the bandwagon blindly. Some techs that I know who had never touched Vista were declaring it useless.

When I did a TV interview on the various flavors of Vista about a month after they came out and gave the OS a B- overall, some techs thought I was mad. I had to defend myself and thus put out the challenge to any tech who followed the HCL and the SCL to let me know if they had any problems. I had quite a few converts, other than my hardcore Linux buddies.

Anyway...I digress. I'm not a Microsoft evangelist or anything but really...don't hate the player...hate the game.

Now excuse me...I have some compiling to do.

Well lets see I started with my first computer in 1979 on a Trs 80 model III, moved up to a few IBM clones not long after that, used win 3.1, win 95, win 98, win ME, Win XP home, Win XP Pro, and now Vista Ultimate. Vista is the most powerful, most stable, easiest to use of any of the MS Os's. Ive dabbled on many different unix / linux flavors over the years, and a Mac Pro quad core with 4gb of ram. I had issues with every linux distro, and the Mac crashed on me 4 times in less than 4 hours. This was using simple programs. Ftp's, photoshop etc. BRAND new Mac and it crashed 4 times. The mac had no excuse of hardware compatibility. After all mac builds them. Now here are all my copies of vista 3 running on boxes I built and picked out the hardware, and a laptop that came with it preinstalled. NONE of them have crashed on me EVER except my desktop once or twice, but that was due to bad memory timing settings I picked.

As for it being faster than Xp? I beg to differ. Maybe you are talking about a new brand new install? Great, well the problem with xp was always you had to reinstall every 3 or 4 months at most. It would slow down more and more and more as you went. I still have 1 xp pro install sitting in the next room and I have to work on it once a week to get it moving like it should again. So I dont give a hoot what any article might say. I know how MY computers run using vista and its awesome.

I like it so far. I don't notice any Ram problems that people talk about -- mainly because I have 8GB. It's cheap, so why not? Too much is never enough.

Aside from some extra security headaches, its good overall, and very slick looking. The only problem I have now is that I can't write files to the Vista machine from my XP machines. Not a deal breaker at the moment, but I need to figure it out eventually.

Turn of the annoying UAC(User Account Control), and things are much smoother.

I used my new laptop on location today to download pics, surf the web and print out model releases and everything seems fine. It seems to be as fast or faster than my other computer which had XP. That's basically all I wanted the laptop for anyway. I don't plan to do any heavy duty processing with it.

Vista is not shit and I told ya already, your problem is a driver or a hardware issue. My suggestion is to run the Vista Upgrade Advisor and it will give you an idea of what is causing the problem. Another thing. Did you load the chipset drivers? And check for updated drivers for the other devices in that machine? And what Graphic card are you running in that anyway?

Your problem is probably a simple one.

See post number 81. I'm far from an idiot in such matters and trust me the only thing laughable is how so many persons have jumped on the "Vista sucks" bandwagon without knowing exactly what they are talking about. And like I said in that post, even some of the top techs in the industry have fallen victim to this error in judgment, because they simply forgot to use the HCL and the SCL.

Any tech who disses Vista has to go back to basics and get the chip of "I just know my shit without RTFM" off of their shoulder.

Look carefully at the changes Microsoft made in Vista and appreciate that they finally made that tough step of locking down their software and raising the standards for drivers and software. Microsoft didn't make Vista as proprietary as Apple, but they clearly took a big risk of moving in that more concentrated direction.

Again, crappy/outdated/incompatible hardware, software and drivers will mess up Vista. At least Microsoft haven't gone as far as Apple and completely lock down the ability to install outdated software/hardware. Apple users just suck it up and thus their stuff works consistently.

Hopefully you guys who are dissing Vista can understand what Microsoft did with that OS a bit better.
