The sad truth is probably that it does work. There are plenty of people with no business ethics whatsoever in this industry.Originally posted by The Other StevePoor reply - overused - nobody believes it anymore - and the best thing you could do is let this thread die.
As it is you're standing up at the top of the page wearing a big target and all the guys who have some business ethics are just ripping you to shreds.
But then that seems to fit with your business model/(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Multiple reasons. First and foremost, it does not remove all files. Secondly, by their own admission, there used to be a "bug" which made uninstalling hard/impossible. Third, their software changes very often and takes on many different forms. Even if it works today, this may not have worked a month ago (and didn't, according to many reports), and may not work a month from now.Originally posted by BrujahDoes it work? I think it also has to do with the way people get to the site. There is a difference in signup methods for people typing in the domain or getting their through a referral code. And ofcourse a lot could depend on the country the surfer is from.Comment

Interesting:
http://thorschrock.com/nucleus/index.php?itemid=2There is a nifty little scam going on where unsuspecting consumers install MediaPass software on their computer hoping to download music and video files. Except when they agree to install the software, they are also agreeing to allow MoviePass to use their computer's hard drive and internet connection bandwidth for their purposes. Oh, and they also make you agree that they can sell your personal information to their affiliates - of course.
With that aside, when you install the MoviePass software, you are installing a free trial. Again, in that nasty little terms of service agreement you agree that if you do not cancel your trial BEFORE it expires, that you will pay them $29.99 a month for their service. Once the trial expires, a box will start popping up on your screen, increasing in frequency over time, asking you for your billing information.
If you remove the software and just forget about it, you are caught in yet another clause in their TOS that states that if you do not immediately provide your billing information, they will bill you for an entire year of service (a $359.88 tab) and then turn you over to a collection agency.
The only way to stop this cycle (easily) is to cancel your subscription immediately unless you intent to subscribe to their services. To do this you MUST call their toll-free number.
After all of that I have to say it is pretty crappy that this scam is actually working on people. If you have any influence over the general public (or at least your local LAN), let people know about this shady operation.
Most importantly, DO NOT remove the MoviePass software before you call to cancel the account they have open for you (yes, if you have the MoviePass pop-ups, they have an account for you). They will require a number from their software to deactivate your account. Once you have killed your account, you can remove their software to stop those annoying pop-ups. For a free tutorial on removing MoviePass (after you cancel your account) visit http://www.schrockinnovations.com/removemoviepass.php.
We have sent a press release to our local media outlets and made it available on our homepage. If you want more info on MoviePass or the MediaPipe software, visit www.moviepass.tv./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

truthfully, I was considering, but then I thought about it. Is it really worth the risk.. I mean, I got you who I never heard of til this past week or so saying it's all ok, it's all legit, but on the other hand I see all these negative posts coming from people whom I've gotten familiar with over the last few years, wether it be from affiliate programs, or link partners, trade partners, online collaboration, or plain fucking around, or whatever, but I believe & trust Franck who I never met in person, before I trust a program trying to defend itself without backing up the facts.Originally posted by WDjaywhen the drama started I felt the same way....till I saw the signups!
All the negatives seem to have been supported with documentaion corroborating the claims, whereas I have seen no such documentation on behalf of webmaster direct refuting such allegations.
Besides, 50cents per install, what a measly toke compared to the upsell of $99!! Shit, If a member spends $99 on membership sites, I'd make at least $44

Especially the title:
MoviePass Spyware a Major Financial and Security Threat
You know what. I never in this history of gfy seen so much evidence being ignored and denied by either the mods and a few people here defending them (jeesh, they also happen to be pushing them, what a coincidence).
Anyway this is getting ridiculous. Its like discussing if grass is really green.Last edited by Dirty F; 05-23-2006, 03:04 PM.Comment

Sorry, but I don't know you, don't know your company, but what I DO know is that your install behaves in a way that I simply do not approve of, period. I don't like the whole ransomeware model it's based around, uninstall available or not. (and many many people seem to be saying NOT)
I won't touch it. Period.
Nor will I touch any other program I find who is sending surfers to it.

So, when a surfer simply removes the software (like media did) his account is still open.Originally posted by punkworldInteresting:

agent.dll & user ID in the reg
These are necessary because they are what allow our paid members to continue to access the site. Nothing more. Agent.dll reads the reg ID. Thats it. We run a sucessfull legit business and have for a long time. We are not fly by night and plan on continuing to give users a great value and makle our partners huge profits.
Wrong. According to the installer's coding it renames and moves a few files and leaves more than just those 2 on the system. Just how well do you know the person(s) that wrote this?Comment

The people who created WebmasterDirect, and anybody promoting it - have thought about how they are going to make money, and have decided they are OK with making some people very unhappy, essentially stealing from those people.
I worry about those people.
In an industry where you can earn a very good profit by providing a product people are happy to pay for, they have decided they would rather cut corners and simply steal from consumers.
If a WebmasterDirect supporter was honest with himself, his thoughts may go like this: "Creating value isn't for me. I am not creative or motivated enough to make money in a legitimate way. I will extort money from anyone I can."
Question : If WebmasterDirect are cool with extorting money from surfers, what is going to stop them from screwing affiliates too?

When you uninstall something, it should be uninstalled. If I'm correct, don't you also leave two executables on the computer, itbill.exe and mpp2pl.exe? I apologize if this has been changed in the last month. These are necessary because they are what allow our paid members to continue to access the site. Nothing more. Agent.dll reads the reg ID. Thats it. We run a sucessfull legit business and have for a long time. We are not fly by night and plan on continuing to give users a great value and makle our partners huge profits.
I think Norton is the least of your worries. Every major Spyware/Adware/Virus remover flags your software. As for MISflagging, I have a feeling you are going to have a tough time getting off their list. Besides matching their criteria for malware, MediaPipe has also been listed as one of the 4 worst offenders on the web by StopBadware.org. I can't imagine everyone is MISflagging you.We spent months going throught the process of becoming Norton trusted software (adware/spyware free-complete discloser). We HAVE been running as trusted software for many months. About two weeks ago Norton began MISflagging us. We are in contact with them and the issue is being resolved as quickly as possible.
I'm not going to begin to compare you to AOL, Visa, and Disney. They do have complaints, but they also have millions of happy customers. I'd argue that you have more complaints on the web than they do, and they've been in business longer and have exponentially more customers. Also, for a company with so many happy customers, why are you not advertising for your own name in the search engines? Seems silly considering how many people must be searching you to download your software. As a few have pointed out, complaints can be found about ALL companies with a user base as large os ours. AOL, VISA, DISNEY etc. Gfyers are posting what amounts very few complaints in relation to our user base. Well under 0.01%.
These threads over the past few days from both sides are just silly. Companies can do what they want and should (as long as it is legal). If you're a webmaster and don't like it, don't support it. Don't send traffic. However, I'm sure their stuff converts, and I'm sure they can make a lot of webmasters money. It's a personal preference and each webmaster should make their own decision. Most webmasters should mind their own business.
However, these kind of threads insult our intelligence. We both know what this software is and does. If you want to argue the definition of malware/ransomware, so be it. But don't try and go around claiming this is some innocent software that hoards of people love. A few Google searches tell a whole other story.Comment
