The most common penalties are pretty easy to identify. Begin by doing a site:
www.domain.com search in google and verify its listing the pages in its index, if its a new site, you can also use this search to see what pages have been picked up.
Another common, and usually missed penalty that is very frequent is the google 950, i say common, because often people who lose their sites, or cant ever find them in serps, and upon investigation, we will find them back at the 950th result.
How to check? Go to google, search your keywords, and go all the way to the back of search results, then click the link to show all results including ones removed. After that, click to the end of results again, google will only show you 1000 results for any given term, max.
If you are listed in the last page of these results, after requesting to show all results, then you have been given the "950 penalty", duely named for the placement it puts sites back to.
This penalty is forgivable, and once corrected usually sites bounce back out to their expected serps sometimes as fast as a week later. I have personal experience with this type of return out of penalty on one site I own.
