Parents and I'm assuming doctors (I've been one but not the other) left the name and phone number of where ever they were going to be ;)
Then there were pagers.
Cell phones just made it easier. Of course, we had a cell phone (paid about $5 a minute) when I was pregnant 25 years ago. And the reception wasn't that great. The best was when I was 9 months pregnant and left a message for my husband to bring home a gallon of milk. The message was so garbled he thought "it was time" and in 15 minutes he and 4 of his employees came bursting through the door ready to rush me to the hospital. And the bastard didn't bring any milk.
