It's a cup where country's from the world, not just the USA, compete for.

Unlike the 'world' series in baseball, where there's fuck all 'world' about it...

I used to live in a small town in the middle of nowhere in the US where the female soccer team was a lot larger than the guys'. Soccer was a rage among kids, in spite of their heavy southern accent. During the last WC, in a bar while watching a Brazil match, a group of grenngoes challenged me with shots of Goldschlaugger score-to-score. Brazil made 4 and I swallowed 4. One of the guys fainted at count 3. Really fainted.

if the sport wasn't so boring I might be able to enjoy it, but I can't watch even 1 minute of soccer.

lol you forgot college football and college basketball.

Soccer is growing more and more popular, but not really that fast. I think the MLS is fluff (sorry MLS fans). It could be 10 times more exciting, I think they do a bad job of representing the sport.

Americans dont realize how much better soccer is in Europe.

Wouldn't surprise me to see the Netherlands finally get the title that's eluded them, but there's something missing in their line-up... not sure what it is. They have a go-to guy, and they have great ball control. They always seem to have that one slip-up though...

Brazil is still the team to beat, that is until someone beats them in the knockout round...that and the teams that emerge from the Group of Death (Group E with Czech Republic, Italy, and the USA) will be very strong and probably both make it to the semis (after the group, the first two elimination rounds will seem like friendlies...)

Me, I try to attend a DC United game at least once a year. It's a lot of fun. The only problem is the stadium (it sucks big time). They need a real soccer only pitch to really make soccer a hit in DC (they do draw an average of about 20,000 a game though, which for soccer in the USA is astonishingly high...of course, they draw that mostly when they're winning. Winning is something DC United does do on a regular basis...)

As for sports popularity in the USA, ESPN did a survey and they came up with this:

                        1) NFL Football (American football, not what the world calls football)
                        2) NASCAR (Stock car racing)
                        3) MLB Baseball
                        4) NCAA Football (College Football)
                        5) NCAA Basketball (College Basketball)
                        6) NBA Basketball (Pro basketball)
                        7) PGA Golf (Pro Golf)
                        8) NHL Hockey
                        9) LPGA Golf
                        10) Tennis

I'm thinking this was the order, I can't find the actual results, but I remember the top 3, and as an avid hockey fan I remember, the NHL came up 8th.

And yes, in 2004-05, the NHL was missed by some of us.

                                          some do, some don't.

I'm a huge soccer (whoops, football) fan. I watch the EPL regularly, and had a ticket application in for this world cup but can't attend due to business. I'll be at the next one fo sho!

I can speak for myself and quite a few of my friends. Soccer is popular here (at least in my neck of the country). I would say that it?s more popular with Americans that are not the ?typical? Americans. Soccer fans here in the U.S. are generally the types that travel and have interests outside of the country.

I?ve played soccer since I was six years old and still do. I love the game. I think what?s lost on most Americans is that it?s a game of small victories and losses. Americans want to see massive amounts of scoring and most will not tolerate a 0-0 tie. Most don?t understand the intricacies like the offside rule or what is or isn?t a foul. You can always tell which Americans have never played the game because they think it?s easy. Yet if you watch them try to kick a ball they almost fall on their face they are so awkward.

I also have tickets to the U.S. vs. Czech Republic game and I can?t wait. Look for me in the crowd. I?ll be the one in the U.S. jersey.
