People of real faith have had a personal experience with their god that provided them with the faith that God exists. Those that have not had this experience will never have real faith.
There is an old military saying...there are not any atheists in a foxhole when under fire.
I know a person that was shot 13 times by a German machine gunner during the second world war. They were all upper body hits including his face. He survived the incident and had about two years of reconstuctive surgery afterwards. He had a personal experience with his God during this period of time and has been a man of real faith ever since.

On an intellectual level I don't believe in God (particularly not a big-man-in-the-sky God, which seems to be the only kind most atheists know how to argue about), nor do I subscribe to the narrow-minded views of organized religion(s) so you simpletons can just stick your bullshit accusations of hypocrisy straight up your ass.
BUT.
I do find myself praying and gaining solace & inspiration from it. It's partly out the memory of childhood faith, but mostly I just refer to it as suspension of disbelief, and for me it makes the world a better place. It makes movies worth watching, books worth reading, and praying a transcendental experience. If you can't/don't want to do it, maybe you just don't have enough imagination. I like living in a land of partial make-believe! I enjoy a lot of things that different religions have to offer and embracing whatever makes life more magical and good.Comment

When your kid is lying on an operating table or your mother is waiting for a complicated surgery....what do you do? Do you tell them to get ready to kiss it all goodbye? Or do you have faith? Maybe you don't drop down on your knees and pray, but do you just wander around like everything is going to be ok? Do you feel like it will make you a big pussy to hope they survive?
